I'm fascinated by your updates, too. I love hearing experiences from people living far away. And I've never known anyone who's lived in Africa. Well, apart from my dad, but he was in Libya for only one month in the deepest, darkest 80s, so you can hardly class it as "living" there.

Anyway, I have a question for you. I seem to remember a programme on tv where they showed parts of the city, where the architecture was very art deco. This was apparently due to the Italian occupation in the 20s and 30s (I think. I'm a bit fuzzy with dates and I'm too tired to check right now). Am I thinking of the right place?

This sounds right - although neve colonized, Ethiopia was occpied by Italy for a few years around WWII. There are some nice bits of art deco in the older part of town, and several monuments and the like. One other positive Italian influence is a predominance of pizza and pasta among the non-Ethiopian foods that are available.
