For those of you who don't understand why I choose to study fungi, I'll give you a reason: mycologists tend to have a quirky sense of humor.

In support of this claim, I present to you the stinkhorn Phallus impudicus, first described by a pioneering French mycologist whose name escapes me at the moment.

It's more common west of the Rockies, but it has a pretty wide distribution. Try looking in damp areas near rotting logs, or even in your home garden (they like woodchips and mulch).

If you're feeling really adventurous, they're edible. :)

I tend to agree with you, but sometimes people (usually molecular/cell grads) like to turn up their noses at such ostensibly "low-brow" humor. Fuckers, the lot of them.
