Cosmetics for Pre-Teens

I'm telling you right now that I would not let my 8- or 9-year-old daughter wear mascara and eyeliner.  There are other moms who probably wouldn't care about it one way or another and might, in fact, like the eco-friendly claims by this company that is targeting their cosmetics to tweens.

But I doubt it.  Still, someone in Walmart's marketing ( Read more... )

UGH. I wouldn't let my 8 or 9 year old wear that stuff either. I would go as far to say I wouldn't allow my 12 year old to wear that kind of stuff as well. 15 or 16? Maybe, but Astrid won't be leaving our house to go anywhere looking ridiculous.

Heh, my sisters BILand his girlfriend put eye shadow, mascara, and colored lip glosses on his SEVEN YEAR old. They are very trashy people to begin with, so it's no shocker to me.

Seven?? Ugh. It used to be just flavored lip balm or strawberry lipgloss for me -- and I was ok with it.

I have a bag of expired Mary Kaye cosmetics that someone gave me that was going out of the business. My 7 yr old and 9 yr old may get the bag out to play with. But we treat it just like dress-up in dress-up clothes and heels. It's playtime and it gets washed off when they are done and by no means may they leave the house with it on. And I still took the mascara out of the bag.

To wear for realz? We're quite a few years away from that yet. I tell them they are beautiful enough that they don't need cosmetics. It's only when you get older and you are losing the beauty of youth that you cover up your natural looks with cosmetics. :) But they do have fun with their playtime and are getting quite good at applying blush and lipstick. Lol.

You are the third person who has said this to me when I mentioned this article -- seriously!

I really hope my daughter doesn't decide she's not pretty enough without the stuff when she gets to be around that age -- she shouldn't ever have to think it, though. I don't make a big deal out of makeup myself. Still, they put so much pressure on them. It scares me. My word would be a big, fat NO, though, no matter how much she whined.

I had Tinkerbell peel-off nail varnish when I was 6 (turns out it still stains bedding), and a lipstick and blush from the same line... But it was very much a dressing up type prop, not something I'd be allowed to wear out of the house, etc. I was basically allowed to wear make-up for fancy dress out of the house when I was a kiddo, and that was it, then for special occasions when I was 12, but I don't think I was allowed to just decide to wear it out of the house until I was 14 ( ... )

It's one of my pet peeves companies targeting children and aiming things at them that would be more suitable for teenagers not children. It depresses me that children can't be children these days, it seems to be about getting to adulthood as fast as you can (and the ad companies making millions out of it). And then people are surprised that children are developing body image issues, eating disorders and so forth. Due in no small part to the over airbrushed photographs that appear in magazines (that's a pet peeve of mine from a photography point of view).
