London?

What would be a rough idea of annual living costs (rent, feeding etc) for London?  I'm trying to work out whether it would be possible to live off of £15,000 a year in London. London is a big strange place that I know nothing about other than it is more expensive than real places.

Advice?

You would be able to live, frugally. A reasonable room in a less fancy part of the city will run to £500 a month, including bills. You might be able to get a single room for £400, but that's a false economy I think. So £6000 a year. Check spareroom.co.uk. Travel will be £25 - £30 a week (Zone 1 - 3 travelcard, assuming work in Zone 1 and room in Zone 3), so £1500 a year. £15k will get you, what? £12k after tax? Should be enough left over for food and going out occasionally.

Tax shouldn't be a problem as it is a PhD place which is tax free. So that should work out quite well then really money wise...
