2009 Discovery: Audiobooks

Reflecting on the year past I felt compelled to write about one of the most amazing discoveries I've made: The Audiobook.

The truth as of late is that I spend more time driving than sitting around at home with time on my hands. Thus, would rather listen to a book then have no time to read at all. I did read a few actual books over the last few ( Read more... )

Stephen King also wrote a great article about audiobooks and how much he loves them. I think it was for Time, but I'm not sure. But there's this whole thing about listening to a story that's pretty great, and how audiobooks keep alive the tradition of sitting around and being read to. It's about experiencing the story and reading is only one way to do it. And a story read by a great voice is wonderful experience.

I listened to Murder on the Orient Express as read by David Suchet, who is the actor best known for doing Poirot, and it was great.

I just read "flames" about a week ago; loved it! I'm sure the audiobook is hilarious.

I never really got into them; mostly because I do love the..practice?...method?...habit? of sitting down (or laying in bed) and reading. But I would also love to listen to a classic read by someone fabulous.

I wonder if Emma Thompson has narrated anything. I could listen to her all day.

I love reading too but I don't even have the time, it's lame, I wish I did!

I was thinking that last night about Ben Folds. I love his voice so much.

I love I Am America And So Can You, but I can't imagine how it would plausibly work as an audiobook. The civics textbook parody is a significant part of the charm, and that wouldn't translate into audio.

I would really love to discuss Eat, Pray, Love with you. I read it at a fork in the road and it kind of shoved me down one of the lanes. and am interested if it had a similar effect on you.
