Wow Pat- I'm sorry to hear about the car. That sounds pretty stressful, and when money is tight- big expenses always suck. Still though- I'm glad the whole "this usually results in death" thing turned into a "smoothly glided into the breakdown lane" scenario. I feel deeply grateful for whatever forces were at work (even if they were just phsyics) and kept my friends safe.

You were aware of a problem and were taking it seriously; so were probably driving slower than normal. That probably went a long way toward keeping you safe. Even reducing speed by 5 or 10mph makes a huge difference.
What kind of idiot decides the best way to make some quick money is to jack up a truck and steal a used tire? How stoned does someone have to be before that sounds like a good idea? You live on a hill.
