I'm tired of putting on the right music and sitting down to write, only to look to my left and see a stack of student work I need to grade. That always takes me out of the mode

I think writing is a love/hate relationship. There are so many times I sit down to write something worthwhile and end up talking online or writing pointless LJ entries. In the words of Dave Ward, "Writing is pretty much sitting around doing nothing for a long time, then having quick flashes of brilliance"

I can't imagine a world where John King doesn't write. That would be weird.

I'm also tired of working so hard I'm exhausted when I go to write, and then falling asleep in front of the computer. I'm tired of sittingn down to write and then doing such a freak out about a deadline I do nothing instead.

All great writers have those moments, John. Then they win awards and write about those moments in their autobiographies. I agree with Ann - John King not writing is weird.

have you ever read Rilke's "Letters To a Young Poet"? i have a copy i can let you borrow if not. it sounds to me you should read this, that you are at a point you might need this, like i have many times. sometimes we all have to just force our fingers to move and accept that we're going to write shit. sometimes it's simply the showing up--
