So, I've been graduated for almost four years now, and have really not had a whole lot of luck finding editing jobs in this city. There have been a few opportunities, but the fact remains that to up my chances of finding and landing something, I'd have better luck in Toronto. Which is still a possibility for someday, but as things are looking

A thought: choose another language.

I'm sure you could do French, why not? But other languages have less competition and Ottawa needs all of them (capital and all that). The French translaters tend to be born French speakers, not as common to have English who learn French later in life.

One friend of mine was a translator and recommended the same tactic. This was years ago but I don't see why it wouldn't still apply. As a side, I'd also stay away from Spanish. Too much natural talent for these languages on the continent.

Only problem with that is that in order to be a decent translator, one has to be quite fluent in both languages, and I don't see myself becoming proficient enough in anything else in a year and a half.

And while I'm well aware of the bias towards francophones for many government jobs, "later in life" is usually later than four, so I see myself doing OK.

That said, I have toyed with the idea of eventually branching out into German or something, but for right now, I'm going to stick with the languages I know.
