Really enjoying this story, anon! Especially all of the little hints of how Merlin's character has changed (like the obvious plot afoot with the visiting nobles that normal!Merlin would've jumped all over by now, but instead he's completely blanking on). The bit where he says he's not a naturally curious person hit hard - he really is losing himself.
And I'm excited by the inclusion of the new knights! Hopefully enough people are starting to notice something's off...
Can't wait to read more! :)

It's heartbreaking, when Merlin only refers to himself as 'the servant'!

Arthur woke with a headache that would kill a lesser man, he was sure of it.
He was quite sure it had been the wine that had done it - although the whole affair with his manservant could have very well been the cause. God knew Merlin could drive anyone to insanity if he tried hard enough.
But just thinking about his manservant was enough to turn the pounding in his skull up a notch or four. The warmth of the room, usually a comfort in the later seasons, was suffocating. He’d gotten used to waking up to cold rooms, the castle stone leeching the meager heat from the air. Merlin was rarely awake before Arthur, and it wasn’t like Arthur would light his own fire. That would be ridiculous ( ... )

His first thought was to head to the throne room, in hopes that his father knew what was going on, but fortunately (or unfortunately, it could be said) the answer came to him in the form of an out-of-breath squire ( ... )

Arthur frowned. “Then why the poison?”
“Separating energy from a living body is dark, very powerful magic. There are few sorcerers left alive who would have such power, if at all. It is much easier, however, if the person is already dying, and the soul is already detaching itself from the body.”
“And the vital energies…?”
“Will strengthen the sorcerer’s power, if only for a short time.”
“So it’s possible this… assassination was just the first step in a much larger evil,” Arthur theorized. Everyone - Merlin aside - nodded in grudging agreement.
Merlin’s unresponsiveness sparked a raw edge of frustration that had been burning in Arthur all morning. “What do you think, Merlin?” he snapped, a painful twinge in his jaw reminding him of that horrible headache ( ... )
