It's a while I posted an entry..what a good way to post about torchwood!
A while ago I posted an intial reaction and information post to a japanese dub of torchwood:
kino-san.livejournal.com/14627.html It's been a while snice I came back to torchwood a bit of my interest got lost due to lots of things one of them being hetalia which is my current obbession. But now torchwood is coming back next year (minus lanto T_T) and watching john in tonights the night season 2 I thought I'll search for torchwood in japanese on nico nico douga and low and behold I found the links to the whole of season 1 in japanese.
So finally I got to watch parts of season 1 of torchwood in japanese thanks to nico nico douga woo! As an anime and torchwood fan I was keen to see how this turned out. I am not japanese, but I am currently trying to learn it and due to my experience watching and listening to anime, music and drama CDs I have a good idea of whats going on plus I have all 3 seasons of torchwood on dvd.
First of all I like to say in general that the voices are too deep (men and woman) and it was very hard to tell who voices were whos. There is no accents boo! it would of been nice if gwen or ianto had a osaka kansai ken accent but that's japan for you even in hetalia everyone sounds japanese (apart from spain with kansai) But it was watchable (and listenable) and nearly kept most of it's script in place.
now on to the voices of the main characters.
Jack: A good effort from Takuma Takewaka as he tries to capture that american charm of john barrowman, sounds macho, charismatic and serious when he needs to (But really it can't beat john barrowman). Sadly he's very hard to stand out from the other male VA cast who all have deep voices argh! (in particular epi 12).
Gwen: I have a feeling I heard her in another role before (madison in heavy rain comes to mind), but yeah she's ok she can protary those emotions eve does. One problem is that she and toshiko VA almost sound the same!!! Plus she does sound a bit too posh and lady like which really does'nt suit gwen.
Toshiko: I don't know why toshiko ever needed to be dubbed because mori-san is japanese herself. I can say much about her because her and gwen voices are too hard to tell apart.
Owen: I have a new found love for Daisuke Namikawa because of hetalia in which he is amazing in (voiceing two italys who are funny as hell, singing the ed songs I love and I am obsessed with the tomato song). But him as Owen......hmm yeah..it's ok but it's really his deep south italy voice with not much effort. I am very disapointed because I know what Daisuke Namikawa is capable of from watching hetalia, one good thing is that I can tell him apart from the other male VA (actually that may be because I watch wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much hetalia).
Ianto: sigh ianto my fav character I can't say much about him, Shuhei Sakaguchi is alright but he has the same problem as Takuma Takewaka they don't stand out enought and it's very tell to tell whos speaking. He really needed to put on that kansai ben accent like he did with his character in Yadidate japan.
Overall for me the japanese dub is very average an on par compared to the orignal. I watched and compared the scene in epi 13 where owen shoots jack and it did loose the tense atmosphere and got lost in translation. Jack's scaristic comments on his team mates and when he said that owen needed bigger balls were not that passionate in the japanese. When Owen grabbed the gun and was about to shoot jack he was yelling with rage (but daisuke did'nt even yell or was'nt angary enough). Gwen swearing was'nt there (typical). But when ianto said "what have you done?" after jack got shot in a scared high pitch like tone it was imitated well in the japanese, so it's not all bad. (actually I watched and compared a lot of scenes but I could go on forever).
I really want to watch season 2 in japanese now (snice it's slightly better then season 1) I know it's out in dvd, but not broadcasted in japanese tv yet ( so I have the impression these episodes were recorded off from the tv). It's made me to think how many languages torchwood has been dubbed in and what they sound like I know german is one of them)
On the other note nico does also has doctor who episodes in japanese as well, which I can't be asked to watch because I am busy with other things plus I am not a big fan of doctor who.
Anyway for people with nico accounts and have an interest in watching torchwood in japanese I am going to post the links for the episodes below. It's fun to see the japanese comments and their impressions of men and women kissing which is always almost eeeeeeee! (what!!) or wwwwwww (laugh).
