The American love of its flag is a bit bewildering to us outsiders.

Well, you're Canadian. You have no experience with the cunning use of flags, except on the receiving end.

Britain knows. Britain understands.

(I would guess the percentage of flag-lovers isn't THAT much higher in the States than Britain - the rest of the country just ignores them less.)
