[NVC 13, Night] -- [La'T'Freja] -- [Spock, Bones, Sybok, and Jim]

After Guinan's recommendation, Jim definitely had the mindset for another little surprise for Bones that night beside the tickets and the blowjob. A dinner, in a nice restaurant... he liked the idea of it. Romantic, even. He snorted at himself, mentally, wondering when he had become in the least bit romantic ( Read more... )

It was hard to say no when Jim looked so damned excited. Besides, Bones admitted to himself, he hadn't exactly gone out of his way to experience high Vulcan cuisine. Maybe it wasn't as bad as he imagined.

The place was simple on the inside, yes, but simple in the way that a diamond is simple.  Everything was clean and straight and polished and of the highest quality and despite being properly attired, Bones suddenly felt underdressed and out of place.

"Everyone here's a Vulcan, Jim," Bones whispered as a passing couple glanced at them before returning to their conversation.

"So?" Jim raised a brow in Bones' direction. "Just be on your best and we'll be fine." So much the pot calling the kettle black. "Just consider it an adventure in culture, or something like that."

Jim spoke to the Vulcan just inside the door, who was subtly eyeing them like vermin, in his own tongue. He wondered if the slight raise of an eyebrow he saw meant the Vulcan was surprised, and equally wondered if being around Spocks all the time meant he was learning something. With a light slipping in of Guinan's name, it got them a wide table, tucked away with dividers and plants to keep down outside noise as well as let them speak without being easily over heard. Jim appreciated the quiet and being able to glance the door out of the corner of his eye.

He sat down, still smiling. "Might as well experience the best of it while we have a chance. I've heard Vulcan food is supposed to be amazing... something about their tastebuds being weaker than ours."

"I heard it was highly seasoned veggies," Bones retorted, but that didn't stop him from eying a passing meal being taken to a nearby table. Smelled good. "I wonder how hot it is," he wondered aloud. He did like spicy food.

The talk of food did jog a memory. "I found a place I wanna take you to. Southern cooking, like back home. Real Southern cooking." There was a huge grin on his face as he recalled the cobbler.

"I hope it isn't too spicy," Jim grumbled, but couldn't help smiling.

The concept of Southern cooking on a planet many lightyears away from Earth boggled Jim's mind. "You're bullshitting me." Jim just gave him a look, combined with a grin. "Why would the Vulcans have a restaurant serving Southern food?" The idea seemed surreal, but Jim couldn't tell if that grin on Bones' lips was amusement or excitement about the idea.

Bones stopped someone to ask where the bathroom was. The Vulcan waiter stiffened a bit, then indicated toward the back of the restaurant, where the 'hygiene chamber' was located. Whatever, he thought, as he found the room in the back, around the corner. Clean and neat and stone, like everything else in this place.

But he could hear Spock in one of the stalls, coughing. Didn't seem to be an emergency, so Bones leaned back against one of the walls and waited for him to emerge.

He hated this. He didn't know whether Vulcans were supposed to have fight-or-flight instincts but ever since his four months in desert it seemed like everything came down to it. The hour before being admitted to (and rejecting) the Science Academy, the morning before his first class at Starfleet, and the morning before he first taught one. There were a few other incidents where he got the same sick cold in his stomach, but only those (and one or two more incidents) had it actually manifested into something like this. Fingers splayed wide as his palm pressed to the wall to support himself as he hunched over, the other hand wrapped around his stomach to keep the folds of his tunic out of the way ( ... )

He hadn't expected that reaction, fear. Spock looked pale, but probably felt better from getting whatever was bothering him out of his system.

"You okay?" Not that Bones could do much, he hadn't brought any of his usual with him, other than his pocket scanner. Vulcan robes were not conducive to carrying many things.

He didn't feel that much better, because he knew he would still have to go out and deal with that, his brother and Jim ignoring him and Leonard following Jim's lead.

"Adequate enough for the circumstances," He murmured, stepping over to the sink and grabbing one of the little paper cups from the dispenser to fill with water so he could rinse his mouth.

Spock did keep a careful eye on Leonard in the mirror. But what kind of insanity was it when you felt you couldn't trust your bondmate, that this environment was apt for some sort of revenge?
