[NVC Day 27] -- [Open Office] -- [Open to All]

Jun 03, 2010 09:25

With the sentencing over, the Enterprise would soon be leaving Sha'Kwai and returning to its original mission. By this point, Jim was ready for it. He wanted off the planet, his wanderlust getting the better of it. It was the longest stretch of time he had spent in once place minus his years at the Academy - always moving, always traveling, wanting ( Read more... )

It took him two trains and a long walk to make it over to Jim's quarters. Sybok suspected foul play immediately when he saw the door open--but relaxed when he saw Jim lounging with a padd on the other side of the quarters, outside.

"Afternoon, Jim," He said, emerging onto the deck. "Busy?"

Jim looked up at the familiar voice, giving a small smile at the sight of Sybok. "Not at the moment, but it's been a busy day." He turned in his seat, facing Sybok completely.

"What brings you here?" A little flick of his fingers towards the other seat.

Sybok took the seat at Jim's existence, leaning back and admiring the view for a moment before he focused on Jim.

"I had a hearing today about my citizenship--my visa's almost run out."

"Yea?" He wondered why Sybok opened up with that line. "Then what are you planning to do?"

"They told me I could come back and get permanent residence if I found a job off-planet and didn't get arrested for three years." Sybok leaned on his elbow, and glanced again towards the beach, briefly, before his eyes met blue. "I was wondering if you had an opening on your ship. Anything."

Wasn't what he was expecting, and took him completely by surprise. Jim gave Sybok a long look, studying his face, before scratching the side of his head. "I'll be honest, Sybok... I don't know what you do enough to actually say much in the way of employment for you. Can you tell me that?"

"Anything. I mean it, Jim. You know what it's like, having to adapt. I'm not asking for an officer's position," He knew how much work went into that, years of it. "But I know Starfleet ships have enlisted personnel. Clerical work? Maintenance?" He would iron his clothes and shine his boots if it meant a steady job, but he did try to keep his desperation in check. It was like being out on the edges again, not quite sure where the next meal would come from.

Jim's brows came together. "That isn't answering my question. What sort of skills do you actually have? Where do you specialize?" It would help him limit down the possibilities.

"Specialize?" Sybok chuckled softly. Where would he have found the time to specialize in anything, running from planet to planet worrying about food and shelter? There were things he was good at that he couldn't tell Jim: wading through minds, forcing people to face what they didn't want to face, letting his enemies crumple in on themselves. Not exactly, anyway.

"Psi-active psychology, Federation and Vulcan law, religion and religious history, and practical astrophysics. I can find iron, gold, and platinum deposits within twenty feet, if your geologists are looking for it." Sybok paused, then added: "I've also been told I can grill an excellent steak, if that means anything to you."

Jim boggled a little at not only the ability to locate deposits, but the steak. Too long knowing Vulcans were vegetarians. He rubbed his brow, trying to figure out what he could even offer or... why?

"Why my ship?" Jim looked at Sybok, his mind still thinking over options. "Because of your brother?"

He didn't expect that question to go unasked for long. "Mostly, yes." Sybok leaned back in his chair. "I've heard about what he can do and what's he done. The balance of power on your ship seems rather...precarious, now, considering what's happened."

It was a less than subtle comment that set Jim's nerves on edge. "Professional and personal stay separate." He closed his eyes, thinking. A part of him still wondered about breaking the bond, with what they knew now, but.. for now...

"Right now, I'd be willing to take you on in a temporary way." His fingers cut the air. "Nothing official. You find a place on the crew, like some of the displaced people had to, and we'll see about the long term."

Sybok grinned; he hadn't gotten onto a ship so easily in a while. At least this time it was with people he knew, were familiar with. People that didn't want to kill him or drop him off at the next habitable planet. "Thanks...I appreciate it. When is your crew boarding?"

"Couple of days." Jim leaned forward, giving Sybok a look. "I'm going out on a limb here for you. I find out you're doing anything wrong, you're fucking around on my ship's time and money? I'll toss you out the airlock without another thought."

"This isn't the first ship I've traveled on, Captain, and certainly not the strictest." The warning diminished his glee but not by much; this was something to look forward to. His belongings, what there was, could easily be packed up within a day and a half, and the rest he'd sell and pocket the profits.

"You won't receive any trouble from me."

"Better not." The voice vanished as Jim smiled, leaning back. "We'll see how it goes." Then, a thought occurred to him. "First... there's someone I have to clear this with before I can give you a definite yes."

Spock had to say yes before Jim would allow it. Would Spock want his older brother constantly around?
