Ouch.. I can totally understand. I dealt with a similar thing a few years ago. I realized that there are a couple of options..
First, put that $2000/year into buying one or two used cars each year, drive them till they die and buy something else. This option has stress involved with shopping for a car, buying one, wondering if/when it will break down, and then the rinse and repeat. It's not that fun of an option, but is cheaper than sinking all of the money into the same car.
The second option is what I ended up going for. I bought a new car, then strived to get as many years out of it as possible. My goal is to get my average $ spent on the car down to as close to $1K as possible. Sadly, I'm 7 years into my car and bored of it.
