I'm sure the tower was glad to see you, too. And I have to ask, how does one date a sign based on a distance? That is stumping me.

Heh ... that's an excellent question. :)

You remember that the body of water in the valley below me is a reservoir, right? Well, the construction of the dam and reservoir inundated the original road that ran along the bottom of the valley, so a new road was built higher up, above the reservoir waterline. That happened about 70 years ago. The distance shown on the old sign would be correct if you were hiking to the now-submerged original road, but the distance from there to the current road is shorter.

AH, that makes sense. I sort of thought it might be due to road construction, but I needed the fact about the reservoir to complete the answer. I love how you know all this history of your summer home.
