It's been a busy week. Our office hosts an annual training program for new fire lookouts, and I helped put that on. There was a day of refresher training for the veteran lookouts, too, and I spent another day hauling gear up to Baptiste with a friend

Yep, the stick was a necessary touch in any portrayal of Lewis. I'm glad they didn't coat Emma in squirrel blood, though .. it would be hard to sleep under that quilt if they did!

I'm in Missouri for the summer and I've been hearing about the forest fires in the east, but haven't heard much about what forest fire season is like in BC or Alberta. How has it been like where you are? People here ask about the "fires in Canada" as if the whole country is a small island or something. I hope it's been a below average summer for you in that respect so far.

Northern Alberta has had some *very* major fires this year -- we've sent some folks up to help with those. Nothing that serious in BC, at all, though they've had a little bit of fire activity.

This part of the world is considerably drier than normal -- we had a very warm spring -- and I'm expecting fire danger to pick up quite a bit later in the summer. August is generally the peak time for fire out here.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the fires in Alberta. I was still in Cranbrook when they were going on.
