What a week. Spent most of last weekend at Wembley watching some excellent snooker. Monday I spent the whole day in Parliament with a group of fellow new fast stream civil servants: watching the proceedings (and spotting carakins and strictlytrue hard at work), learning about how it all works, and meeting some interesting MPs including Lembit Opik who was ( Read more... )

We obviously need a mass exchange program. I feel that right now America doesn't have ENOUGH cynics (which is not to say that I expect horrible things of the Obama presidency, but certain parts of his speech were just blatant untruths.) You can get more idealists, we get more cynics, everything is balanced and happy!

No, you are absolutely right. We are way, way too cynical in this country, and it consistently holds us back in all sorts of ways, economic, intellectual and emotional. The fashionable cynicism about politics in this country peddled chiefly by our media is generally a mask for crass stupidity.

I think most people are cynical over here because we know that 99.99% of politicans are bent and the ones that aren't are screwed over by bent civil servants and union leaders. I think people had the same feelings about His Tonyness when he took over and look where he got us. An illegal war, London bombed to high heaven and a recession it'll take us 20 years to get out of. And that's before we even mention filth like Mandelson, who's now on his fourth junket at our expense.

Obama's speech depressed me more than anything, because the low life we have for politicians will never be fit to wipe his arse. Look at Brown and weep.

Got to see the dress tbh.

Hi there....we haven't spoken for a bit so I'd thought a comment was in order on your latest post.

Politics in this country are always a much lower key affair than in the US. Besides which, I still believe a lot of the population of this country are still quite apathetic when it comes to government. Perhaps this is why our current goverment seems to get away with so much - there's no one to stop them. In days past, sometime last century, people actually did care about things and were willing to stand up and be counted. But then again,I suppose back then we didn't have the Big Brother society we now find ourselves in.

On a lighter note, I am so pleased for you and Paul and I'm sure you'll look absolutely wonderful on your big day.
