I HATE DMV.

Yes, I know I forgot to get my license renewed. I was prepared to pay any penalty, but was told there isn't one. So I headed to DMV to get my license renewed. Under a new Virginia law issued last July 1, you have to prove a "legal presence" in the US. A birth certificate is acceptable ( Read more... )

I'm with you on hating DMV. I had my licence revoked for not paying a red light ticket (mind you, i never got the freaking notice from the camera thing in the first place)

So like a good citizen, i go to MD and pay the fine, then off to the DMV to get a new licence. And there i got hit by the same law that got you.

With me, I took to get my birth certificate (which luckily i'd just gotten a cert. copy of cause i need a new passport), social secutiry card, voter registration, (and the zillion forms of ID i carry), but that wasn't good enough. Because i don't have the same name as was on my birth cert. i had to have a copy of my marriage licence (never mind that i've been divorced six years)

It took almost a full day of running around, for both me and my mother(chauffer). And all because of a stinking red light camera, and the current paranoia.

I have no problems with them establishing legal residency. Illegal immigrants aren't entitled to that privilege. However, I do resent highly that this law fails to account for or take into consideration the children of military members. The law should not be prohibitive.

Do you have a passport? free_of_whip February 24 2005, 01:06:40 UTC
For years, I didn't have a copy of my Department of State birth certificate. (I got one only when I was doing an affidavit of support to enable easy_living to get a student visa, and I couldn't get information on whether a passport would do instead of a Department of State birth certificate as proof of citizenship.) I have always used my passport as proof of both birth and citizenship, and have not had an issue with that.

And if you really HAVE to get a report of birth... free_of_whip February 24 2005, 01:10:38 UTC
Instructions are at http://travel.state.gov/family/family_issues/birth/birth_593.html. I can tell you from experience that they are one of the more responsive government agencies. When I needed one in an emergency, they got it to me over one weekend, even though it is supposed to take 8 weeks.

Nah, he doesn't regret it, but after I'm done talking with the DMV commissioner's office, that bimbo at the local DMV is sure going to regret not being nicer to me. :)
