I've been thinking about this for a while, but I've been stirred into action by
mrstotten 's recent post querying about the definitions of gen and het and slash.
My question is, why do you / don't you read certain types of fic?
I am a shipping whore, and read gen / het / slash / femmeslash / combinations of the above - it really just depends on the writing

Similarly, if the scenario that forms the major part of the fanfic's backbone is so far off the canon map I don't recognise the characters anymore and it's not transitional or developmental - I'll ditch.
This doesn't affect AUs or Xovers when they're well thought out.
Shipwise, I just have to be sold a pairing that does or COULD crackle with sexual tension. Gen, I like it violent, psychologically brutal and sitting in a no man's land where slash and het happen but it's non-committal or non-consensual.
I think I'm a themic reader. I do need to adore like worshipful burning at least one character in the mix to read anything. But from there I start getting picky about the story and the content. It's why I never write anything, I do that to my own stuff.

I don't read fic. Any type really. Slash, het, whatever. I just don't read it. I've never really looked for it - beyond one time I had a hankering for Veronica Mars Lamb/Veronica smut (that lasted about a day) and I'll read suggested crack!fic.
My problem is I can never suspend my disbelief....I can never get the 'fan' part out of fanfiction. I don't know...I'm not against smut or whatever pairing you like, I just can't get past the weird feeling.
Who knows, I may come around eventually....but beyond obvious pure smut or crack!fic, I generally just don't bother.
