Those are perfectly fine options unless you expect to have very large amounts of traffic in the future. If you want something that won't crash as soon as you actually get a regular stream of visitors then you want something like vpslink.com. It's more expensive unless you buy a lot of hosting time in advance, but technically a much better service.
(The quoted specs may be less than at places like godaddy, but what godaddy and other shared hosting services don't tell you is that they will cancel your service as soon as you start using a significant portion of that so-called unlimited bandwidth.)
If you want more detailed recommendations I'd be happy to talk this stuff over with you.
So most hosting sites are going to be shared hosting, right? I just remembered, I used to have a domain with directNIC which I think is also shared hosting...
The thing about the traffic is good to know, but at this point, the more I think about it the more I think I'll probably be okay with less bandwidth. Mostly I want a website I can point people to when I'm trying to land graphic jobs so they can see my work. Even if I had a lot of large image files I don't think there would be be enough traffic for it to be a problem. On the other hand, I have more long term ambitions to work on comic books which might lead me to wanting to host a webcomic...which I'd actually want to generate traffic for lol. So idk...if I do register a domain with something like godaddy, could I later transfer it to somewhere better if bandwidth started to become a problem? Or do they make this really difficult?
I looked at dreamhost's pricing and they aren't actually THAT expensive...the yearly plan is about $10 a month. Given Tim's comment above, do you know if they are a shared hosting site or not?
AND I'M GOOD. I might have a big graphic job in the very near future and some other prospects if that doesn't work out :D It's also becoming clear to me that I need more school, so PSU is in my future. Not so good: I just ate a bag of gross gummy candy. WHY DID I DO THAT? I didn't eat lunch D: Uggggh sugar headache...
OH MAN, I WENT TO "ITALIAN NIGHT" AT WAVERLY LAST NIGHT! It was the most amazing food (7-course dinner!) that I've eaten in recent memory. I think Lisa Bagetta, Carol and Steve were the main chefs and the wine was all really really good too. Steve made this really amazing sauce for the ravioli that was like sour cream + whipping cream + lemon zest + lemon + sugar and apparently it's not that hard to make? So I'm probably going to try my hand at it. lol food.
Dreamhost is also shared hosting, yeah. Though they're starting to offer virtual private hosting as well. I was using their shared hosting until recently.
For a portfolio and/or startup comic without a huge amount of traffic shared hosting is going to be fine. And the transfer process isn't too complicated when you eventually need to upgrade to something better.
When you have things up and running (a process I'm completely unable to advise/understand in any case), we could launch that blog we've been wanting to do forever! Although, damn, I don't have much time lately. I have the same amount of work I had at Reed, but the commute really eats up my time..four hours a day, twice/week. I haven't been able to post anything to runaway_tales, but I've been reading here and there (when my favorite people post). Oy. It's just hard to justify prioritizing the internet.
However, I CAN prioritize catching up on House tonight...I have two episodes waiting for me on DVR, and there's a new one tonight. I think I also have the Supernatural from last week waiting in the wings. When you're at Tim and Allie's tonight, tell everyone I said hello and I miss them! (And that goes for you, too. <3)
