Hee! Dude, make this a post in your lj, if you haven't already -- it's really fascinating stuff.

I totally get your point about assumptions of familial intimacy, and how problematic that is. I think that's why the incest narratives I go for fascinate me so much. setssima once said something to the effect of, for "normal" sibling relationships, tossing sexual desire into the mix fundamentally alters the nature of the relationhip. But the thing that gets me about Sam and Dean is that if you add desire, it doesn't really... do anything to the relationship except *intensify* it. The most important and best thing in each other's lives? Check. Obsessive co-dependence? Check. Each other's biggest weakness? Check. Soul-destroying, hell-raising, world-ending LOVE? Check. To a certain extent, it doesn't even MATTER if they're fucking, because they've already got the Grand Passion for the Ages ( ... )

Have I told you lately that I love you? ♥

All this is my extremely long-winded way of saying that the single most awesome and compelling obstacle ever is, yep, INCEST. It is remarkably consistent: even the most sexually uninhibited character will pause, if only for a moment, at the thought of fucking a sibling. It's all the joy of a best-friends narrative, intensified by a MILLION. They live in each other's pockets. They know just about everything about each other. They are very intimate. But they're not having sex, for a damn good reason: they're RELATED. Incest is a very, very believable set-up for YEARS of frustrated longing and furtive desire and fear of being found out. And the GUILT! Both characters have a very compelling reason to keep silent, because the risk is ENORMOUS. But with big risks comes the potential for big payoffs: in the end, you not only get love and sex, but the thrill of living in delicious taboo sin. Awesome.

Very well summarized! In my fandom, you add in the fact that they're famous adds another dimension ( ... )

Hee! <333

And yes! Fame is another awesome obstacle, and makes for those really intense bonds. The Way brothers aren't necessarily selling their souls for each other, but are living *extremely* intimately, and, yes. My first real fandom, in which i actively participated, was popslash; I LOVE that kind of... isolation and claustrophobia that fame (or demon-hunting) can cause, and the emotional bonds that get forged in that space.

*twirls you*

You are so deliciously coherent when you talk about porn.

But with big risks comes the potential for big payoffs: in the end, you not only get love and sex, but the thrill of living in delicious taboo sin. Awesome.

Dude, YES. And really, I could quote this whole post back to you! It is ALL about the nigh-insurmountable ingrained barriers to the hot sex; and then, of course, the feverish tearing of those barriers down.

Bwaaah! *hearts* Thanks, hon!

And dude, yeah -- that tearing down of the barriers is seriously the best thing. And I love how all your stories just GET that -- you always make that moment of decision so PERFECT; esp. Sabotage, Subversion and Double or Nothing -- those are all masterpieces of emotional pacing. *thumbs WAY up*
