Feb 24, 2008 18:46

It's been a while since I did anything other than talk/bitch about my mundane life crap, so I thought it was HIGH TIME that I made a grand post telling you why Things I Like, and the Reasons Why I Like Them, are awesome beyond belief ( Read more... )

This is so so fascinating! I agree with so much of it. Oh, INCEST. I have such an urge to read incest fic now, which of course I CAN do because there is practically a limitless supply of Sam/Dean out there. I love SPN fandom. :D

Seriously, man -- when I found SPN fic, it was like THE HOLY GRAIL OF PORN, in a practically ENDLESS supply! <333

This is completely fascinating. I never thought about it that way before: that a particular type of fic works for you because it satisfies your overall narrative kinks. That's so thought provoking... I'm going to have to re-examine all of my kinks now! *feels new neural pathways forming*

Hee, thanks! I'm always really interested in digging at why I like the stuff I like, and how other people come to their tastes as well -- I'm not a fan of psychoanalysis, but i do love reading about how people tease out and explain their stuff.

DUDE, YES. And see, it took me a long time to decide I wanted a monogamous relationship, and I don't think, in RL, that it's the be-all end-all PINNACLE of relationship styles, that everyone must strive for. But in fic, I have SUCH a weakness for SOULMATES OMG! Because, yes, exactly what you said. Plus, I think, for me, I'm reconciling my discomfort with RL-monogamy by assigning it to SAM AND DEAN'S GREAT TRANSGRESSIVE T00BY LURVE, which, in some weird way, makes it okay? I can only deal with monogamy in fic if it's PERVERSE, apparently; I think it goes along with, I see real life nice normal monogamy every day -- hell, I live it -- so in fic, I want it to be both a GRAND PASSION and DEEPLY WRONG. That's the way to make an exciting story! Domesticity, unless it's like, a reverse domesticity where they haven't had sex yet, but the proximity and the lure of you, too, can have a "normal" life, is part of what lures them into bed.

OH MY GOSH YES.

I think it's precisely because I don't think it's realistic, obtainable, or even really desirable in the real world that soulmateism (IT IS A WORD IF I SAY IT IS!) makes me go googly-eyed and melty in fic. There have to be supernatural (AHAHAHA!) circumstances that bring it about and keep it there (i.e. not just "normal boy meets normal girl, boy thinks girl is pretty and sweet, boy loves girl greatly and t00bily forever"), and then I will totally buy into the whole GRAND PASSION thing, which is tempered and made interesting by the DEEPLY WRONG so it isn't just like. Any random blah romance novel.

All of which is to say: AMEN, SISTER!

This was such a lovely post. I have been thinking a good deal about UST and what are reasonable obstacles. I'm writing a novel and although I want the relationship/sex to be more in the background (at least in the first book) it is kind of at the heart of the plot--but I'm writing about it askance. Not looking too directly at it.

I would add that the I hate you/I love you is also a classic romance trope a la Pride and Prejudice or many Harry/Draco fics. But that is of course very different from incest fic set ups.

Thank you! And yeah, it's so interesting to think about this from both a writing and a reading perspective, and whether you're writing fanfic or original fic. Incest is one of those tropes that can work in both, er, compressed and expanded forms: incest itself brings a lot of emotional/cultural heft to the table, so you can downplay the angst if you wish -- you can really play with how much you actually need to put down on paper. But it's also a GLORIOUS chance for a good long angsty wallow, which is what i was rhapsodizing about.

And yeah, I love you/I hate you is classic -- tghough I think it can work, if in a rather different way, in incest fic. There's some truly awesome Weasleycest and Sam/Dean that deals with how, no matter how much you love your sibling, they can PISS YOU OFF like nobody else in the entire world. There's actually quite a bit of Sam/Dean that starts where they're being obnoxious, trying to wind each other up.

Heh. I love a good coherent porn/kink discussion!

This is great timing because I was just watching a Netflick-provided collection of gay short films (Boys Shorts is the series, this was collection #3) and one of them, to my surprise and delight, was a gay incest film! VERY short, very much a twist at the end, but nonetheless, it had that sibling quality. The interview with the director was cool, too.

D'you mind my linking this on my Monday Meta? I was going to post about watching the film anyway, but this will make a great dovetail.

Dude, I've been wanting to rent that! I'm glad to know it's good. *adds*

And of course you can link! :D I'd love to see how your thoughts are dovetailing. *g*

And you're going to like "Boys Shorts" - they're uneven, but a couple of the films are very mature and really well done.
