seriously, the thing i've always loved about SPN (and i haven't been into the actual lame overarching story arc since about halfway through S1, sadly) was the meta. That show does meta SO WELL, and all my favorite eps have been less about demons and hell blah blah yawn and more like AHAHA GHOST HUNTERS and LOL HOLLYWOOD and OH HEY LET'S COUNT ALL THE GEEKY CULT HORROR FILM REFERENCES HIDING ON THIS SET. <333333
the idea of them taking all that and roping in fandom just makes me utterly delighted. and sure, they probably got it sort-of wrong but with the level of ongoing misogyny in this show, ahaha, even sort-of getting fangirls wrong while actually trying to portray ~wincest~ fangirls is kinda sorta almost getting it right.
OH SPN PTB, YOU MAKE ME SORTA GLAD I WENT TO SEE BOTH JARED AND JENSEN'S SILLY HORROR FILMS FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN AFFECTION FOR YOUR FANDOM. ♥
Tbh SPN fangirls come off as lunatics. This is the first fandom I've ever been in where if it came down to it, I'd disavow the fandom. There isn't a single Con that goes by that there isn't something WILDLY inappropriate that goes on. I think it's a pretty awesome synergy that the Con where Jensen's girlfriend is personally abused happens the same week as the episode of the show shrugging at the fans is aired.
I think this is the face of what's to come wrt fan interaction and media. It surprises people because so many people seem very naive about how marketing works, imo.
I don't know; I have a hard time seeing SPN crazy as anything other than bog-standard stupid fan tricks. It not only lacks the sheer *volume* of stupid, but also the scope and originality of the best Harry Potter or LOTRPS wank. That doesn't mean we shouldn't call out fans on bad behavior, reinforce community norms, etc., but the number and nature of SPN fan transgressions doesn't, to me, come across as unusual for a fandom of its size. SPN fans aren't as well-behaved overall as, say, popslashers, but they have a lot of batshit-cultivation ahead if they want to wank with the big boys.
You know, I think I feel--like I often do with this show--that the creators' intentions were good, and their application is equal parts sloppy and passionate, imprecise; like they didn't mean to be as offensive as they were at some points, and they also didn't intend some of the more interesting implications of the ep's rhetoric. Kind seems apropos that they presented the writing of "Supernatural" as something beyond the author's control!
Also, now I'm curious about your #3, but too lazy/busy to research the background wank.
