Growing up?

One of my teachers just told me that I've become more beautiful in the three years I've been living in Japan! She said when she looked at my profile she felt that I've become a teacher and a lady instead of the university student I was when I arrived ( Read more... )

It depends on the teacher. I'm a little liberal with my students. Many foreign teachers keep a more western physical space between themselves and their students. I generally restrict myself to pats on the back or hair ruffles and occassionally tickling some of my little squishies back when they tickle me. I also have a decent amount of communication with my kids, which again just varies from person to person, and (I think) I'm pretty good at reading where the lines are.

Aw thanks, hun! Yeah, there is a lot more physical contact here. 'Skinship', they call it. But sometimes everything I learned about caring for kids at home comes back and I feel a little guilty for being so free-handed.

Actually, I'm not sure it's entirely that. Growing up in N.A. I think we're instilled with a very serious fear of touching kids that aren't close family. I've volunteered at places where, as an adult, I wasn't permitted to be in the public bathroom alone at the same time as a child, for fear of legal repercussions. Since the culture is different here I don't understand the boundaries so I get nervous when I think I might be crossing one.

You just get more beautiful everyday, you have to accept that! And after being in Japan and working this job for what? Four years now? You have matured in ways you may not be able to see yourself. Enjoy the complement as it is true and know that we all feel the same.

PS Hope your day just keeps getting better!!

Oh Candice, you are one of the biggest sweethearts I will ever have the honour of knowing. Thank you. I forget sometimes that it's hard to see change from the inside.

It did get better! I managed to buy bird-friendly coffee even though I forgot it was Earth Day and successfully asked for help at a help window. (Little victories?) I hope your days can start getting better, too! *HUGS*

Ahhh! I miss you, too!!!! One day I will come home (actually, probably by the end of next year) and then I will be able to see you all again!!!

I need to stop being so lazy and get on skype more often.
