New York, Veterans Day, Story

I’ll tell you, now. When I fist discovered his… indiscretions.

It was earlier, much earlier than I’ve ever admitted before. Yes, I know what you will say. To save myself, my job, I lied. Yes. I did. Hogwarts is my home. Was I complicit, then, in his wrongdoings? I think not. I was more of a… secret confidant to a troubled soul. But I’ll tell you ( Read more... )

Heee! I love the WHOA!!! What I was going for!

Isn't she just delightfully deranged? Seriously, so much fun to write.

Woot Woot! Aren't they all fabulous? And the uniforms? Why we married them, am I right?!?!

OMG! That is deeply disturbing and fabulous. You took Trelawney beyond eccentric to out-of-touch-with-reality stalker. It was scary to be in her mind, and I almost felt sad for her. But she was totally delusional and utterly unremorseful. Nope, no sympathy from me. ;)

Maybe a ride on the old Greyhound is good therapy for anyone's muse.

Yes, the Greyhound drove me to it, LOL!

No, not so much a sympathetic character. "It was scary to be in her mind..." YES!! Squeeing like a little girl here, that is so what I wanted to portray. Although, as I told tinyt, I had altogether too much fun writing her.

Thanks, clairvoyant!!!!!

She really is the crazy woman in the tower. Great story!

Thanks, m'dear. She really is, isn't she?! So deranged.

Poor, pathetic Trelawney, one *almost* feels sorry for her...

Like Clairvoyant, I almost wanted to feel bad for her. Almost. She was being malicious, even if her insanity made her do it.

From time to time, a story pops up that shows us Snape and Granger's relationship from a third perspective, an outsider (Crookshanks, for instance). But not only have I never seen it from Trelawney's, but I've never seen it from a madwoman's! There's a big thing, or so I gather, in lit, all about the trustworthiness of the narrator. This one is obviously not trustworthy at all, but the story is really disturbing because what you've done is write about Snape and Granger having a very illicit, illegal, immoral (very much, on his side) relationship, what with her being 15 when it began. So now it's down the rabbit hole, you know? Shades and degrees. Who's wrong, who's right? And in this case, only Hermione, I think, is the victim.

You're great at getting into your characters' heads. And once again, you bringin' on the darkness, baby!

Yeah, she is rather pathetic here, but you've nailed it, a decidedly malicious streak, even if she is not altogether aware of this maliciousness.

ie the trustworthiness of the narrator: YES! Certainly she's deranged, seeing things that are not there, believing things which have no foundation in reality.

I love messing with morality!!! The darker, ambiguous shades of life. Really, I probably have too much fun doing so.

Thanks, Lula!!

Pffft... I wouldn't mind being "victimized" in such a manner! Haven't you heard... 15 is the new 30....

Very good! I love stories with the 'unreliable narrator' type device, where the person telling the story is relating it from a twisted perspective. Very sinister, a great take on the character of Trelawney, and I also really like the way you've written Snape. Excellent stuff! Really chilling, actually. Hurrah!

Have you ever read "Notes On A Scandal" by Zoe Heller? This reminds me of that in a way - it's also about a prim, bitter teacher who finds out that her colleague is having an affair with a pupil, although in that story the two teachers are both women and the student is a boy. It's quite a short book and a great read; I recommend it!

One really small thing though - you've referred to affairs with 'prepubescent' students, but they aren't really prepubescent, they're either hitting puberty or have passed through it. Prepubescence would be, say, ten-year-olds. Lusting after a prepubescent student would be full-on paedophilia, rather than affair with a girl very slightly under the age of consent (the age of consent in Britain being ( ... )

Regardless of the age of consent, yes, it would absolutely be a big deal if a teacher here had an affair with their pupil. The teacher wouldn't be able to keep their job and they would struggle to get another teaching job anywhere else. Even if the pupil was 16/17/18 and legally able to consent, it would be considered hugely unethical, a major violation of trust etc etc. It would be serious professional misconduct.

Yes, as it should be! It's interesting, though, because there is kind of this sense in our fandom that its not such a big deal, after all, and Snape always gets away with it. Rarely do I see him punished for an affair with a student, as he most likely *would* be, if and once details came to light.

Thanks!
