Part 27
Satoshi
Does it consider as cowardice? From the moment I learned that Sho and Nino were safe, I didn’t consider the possibility of leaving the palace alive. I wanted to minimize the number of people I hurt. But eventually, I still hurt Masaki.
Silly boy, how could you and me escape from this heavily guarded cage alone? Why did you have to make it more difficult for Jun than he already was? He’s not alone like you and me. He had the lives of the Matsumoto family on his shoulders. I never wanted to hurt him because of me, even if it is for the throne or kingdom. Never did, and never will. Masaki, I shouldn’t have pulled you into this. I’m sorry…..
"Nii-san, you are always like that. Do you think you’re a saint?! Don’t you really fear death?! Why do you have to care if you’re making it difficult for me or not?! " Seeing Masaki being carried away into the dark, Jun growled when questioning me. "Do you think you’re helping me, helping Masaki by sacrificing yourself?!" Before I could pay attention, Jun already threw me a punch that knocked me to the ground.
"I am not a saint, and I am not that brave as to not fear death!" I wiped the blood at the corner of my mouth and looked up to Jun. "But I can’t think of any other way to minimize the people that could get hurt!"
"You - can you not give up like this?" Jun squatted down and looked at me sadly. "I said I can let you go. Besides that brat Sakurai Sho, can you just trust me this once?"
"I never doubted you." I calmly spilled out the facts. "In fact, I trust you so much that I can hand over the Arashi Kingdom to you wholeheartedly. Although I knew neither you nor I are interested in that throne, but what can we do?!" I laughed at myself. "The reason for me to fight for it does not exist anymore. The reason that makes me worried does not exist anymore. So, I can finally find my escape. Jun, my little brother, I have always been shouldering responsibilities. This time, just let me be a deserter, will you?"
I saw from the corner of my eyes that the surrounding archer seemed to be ready to raise their bowls and arrows again. I didn’t want to put Jun at risk again. "If you really see me as your onii-san, then just protect the others for me!" Upon saying that, I didn’t wait for him to respond and grabbed his sword. I jumped up and rushed towards the archers…..
"Satoshi!!!" Jun’s voice could be heard from behind me. But wait….something’s not right! That voice was not only from Jun! It was….. I turned my head and….. Why?! Hadn’t Masaki sent him away safely?! Baka! Why do you come back?! Why so stupid to come back to die?!
"No!" I couldn’t help but screamed. The next second I was in eye contact with the person whom I’d missed so much but yet the last person I wanted to see.
"Ah - "
"No!" I screamed again, but this time in horror. Damn it! My first screamed must have made him turned to look at me. The distraction had caused him to lose guard and failed to avoid a flying arrow which hit him in his leg. I saw him trying to stay on his feet while fighting away the guards surrounding him.
He can’t die! No, not here, not now! If he still turned up dying here, everything I did would be for nothing! I had no choice but to keep fighting, not only for my life, but for the life of the person I love as well.
I ran over to Sho as fast as I could, while using my sword to block the arrows that flied non-stopped towards us. I had to be by Sho’s side. Even if all we had left was death, we would face it together. When I reached Sho, he had already fallen on the ground. We were surrounded by the guards and archers and had nowhere to go. To my surprise, the arrows shooting towards us seemed to have slow down.
Is it the end? Are we going to die here?
"Sho!" I held Sho in my arms, ignoring everything around me. I just wanted to spend my last moments with him. "I’m sorry - "
"Why - did you leave me?! How can - you be -- so cruel?!" Sho was getting weaker. I was shocked to see not one but two arrows struck his left leg. "Don’t ever - leave me - "
"I won’t - " I didn’t let him finished. My tears fell onto his face. I looked at him and squeezed out a smile. I couldn’t care less if there are mighty forces surrounding us and we could be killed in a blink of an eye. Even if this was our ending, I was grateful that we could still be together.
"Sho, it’s getting dark. I’ll take you home."
Sho
When I came to my consciousness, I was at an unknown place. Nino, who was also being tied up, was beside me. He hadn’t come to yet. I tried to move my arms and legs, but they were tied up pretty tightly. I saw that there were no guards around, so I tried to wake Nino up.
"Nino! Wake up! Nino!"
"We are at -- " Nino’s reaction was different from mine. "Prince Masaki’s villa?!"
"Never mind where we are! I should be able to untie us! Satoshi must be in trouble. If you are familiar with our surroundings, then hurry and take me back to the palace!" I tried to get my hands out of the rope as I spoke, didn’t care if my hands got hurt by it.
"Are you sure you can rescue him if you go back?!" Nino looked so much calmer than me. "My guess is he asked Prince Masaki to bring us out of the palace. If we go back so hastily - "
"Ninomiya Kazunari! Listen to me! I know he was seeking death! I know once we go back there’s no way out! But even if I’m going to die, I won’t leave him alone! I won’t let him die alone! If you are scared, then just take me back to the palace entrance! I won’t force you to go in with me!"
Nino stared at me for a while. "Satoshi-kun is right! You’re really an idiot! You still don’t know if I am a coward?! You still don’t know if I will go in with you?! Even if you are determined to die for him, shouldn’t you at least be prepared to come out alive? You don’t have to die in there, idiot!"
I looked at him speechlessly. Then I silently looked down and untied him.
When we rushed to the palace entrance, I stopped and said to Nino. "Nino, go get a carriage and wait for us here."
"Sakurai Sho, do you really think I’m a coward?" Nino argued.
"No, of course not! Listen Nino, even if we can come out alive, we’ll need some transportation to help us escape fast, won’t we? You are not trained to fight, you being here to be our backup is more valuable than having you in there."
Didn’t wait for his response, I quickly ran inside. "If we don’t come up by daybreak, just leave!" I yelled out as I ran in, hoping he would hear me. Although I said not going in is a coward before, I really didn’t mean it. He had done enough for Satoshi and me. I really didn’t want him to be in any more danger for us.
When I got there, the chaos was soul-stirring. I only knew that when I saw Satoshi grabbed the sword and rushed towards the archers, my heart was like being hang up high. I couldn’t breathe and couldn’t move.
"Satoshi!!!" I yelled with all my will. A wall of guards prevented me from getting to Satoshi. It’s almost impossible for me to fight through it. Just as I was thinking what I should do, an opening suddenly appeared among the guards. Didn’t care if it was a trap, I immediately sneaked through it. Shockingly, I found that that opening was created for me by Jun!
"Sho!" I heard him calling me. Satoshi was calling me! I turned to look at him. We were just separated for less than a day, but it seemed like years to me.
"Ah - " Looking at Satoshi kept my attention away from the flying arrows and before I knew it, two arrows had struck my leg.
"Sho, it’s getting dark. I’ll take you home."
"Satoshi, let’s - go - home - " I was very tired and weak. I put my head on Satoshi’s shoulder as he carried me up. I closed my eyes and rest. Satoshi is with me, I feel safe.
When I opened my eyes again, everything was dark around me. Satoshi was still carrying me, I could smell his unique scent. He was still walking, I could feel the night breeze. I wonder if we were dead and on our way to heaven. But I don’t care. When I looked up, I saw Satoshi smiling at me.
"Do you blame me - for leaving you?" Satoshi asked me gently.
"No, never - " I said weakly.
"Sho, do you know that I have always wanted to go away with you? I want to have a home with you, our home, with a big tall tree at the front. Do you like that?" Satoshi gave a gentle kiss on my forehead. The last time he did that to me was when I was wounded during the Basarian war. Do I have to get hurt before he’d be so loving to me?
"We are almost out of the palace. Hang in there!"
"Nii-san!" I suddenly heard the voice of Prince Jun behind us. We were not dead! Was he coming to catch us again! I was getting nervous again, but was too weak to do anything. Satoshi stopped but didn’t turn back.
"You two leave the palace and don’t ever come back. I will keep my promise to you. From now on, I don’t have a brother named Satoshi. Remember!"
"I understand." Satoshi replied him, and so did I. Defying the king’s command is already a death sentence. No matter what the outcome was, there would not be a Satoshi and Sho in this world ever.
"Jun, I owe you after all. I don’t think I will ever have the chance to repay you. But I will forever be grateful!" After Satoshi said that, he continued walking and finally met up with Nino at the palace gate.
"Let’s go!"
To be continued.....
