Stinky hot....

Ok... too hot. Just too hot. Ceiling fans on, cross breeze going, and it's still stinky hot. I'm definitely taking an ice block to bed. (no comments from the peanut gallery on that one!)

How is everyone else coping with this weather?

Someone from my wife's family left a spare fan here a year ago. I hven't dug it out yet.

Two weeks ago, I washed my fan out onto the bathroom wall when a rainstorm happened and I wasn't home. It was still cheerfully running soaking wet when I got home. I unplugged it and dried it for a few days and it's currently running in my bedroom window.

When I checked the thermometer a few hours ao, it was 19 degrees outside and 31 degrees inside. The fan in the hallway is supposed to be giving a cross breeze but isn't. Three years ago, we agreed to buy Clayten's cross between a jet engine and fan so he could buy the version with a cordless remote. I don't know what happened to that deal.

I would take an ice block to bed, but I suspect it might get wet if I get it too excited. There's a huge drawer of ice cubes in the fridge's icemaker. Hmmm.

Guy on the radio was giving tips for keeping your place (he referred to it as a "living cavity" - amusing, but don't go there) cooler during this heat wave.

He suggested keeping your doors and windows closed to keep the heat out. Then open up your attic access. Then go down in your basement and blow out the pilot light on your furnace (assuming it's a gas furnace), open the front panel of the furnace and then turn on the summer fan.

It's supposed to draw that nice cool air from the basement up into your "living cavity" and push the hotter air up/out to the attic space.

Of course it doesn't help those of us with no basement, but I thought it was just enough of an engineering/physics type principle to be interesting to you. =)

Anything over 25 degrees C is a travesty. Even the cats are insulted.

Silly bint on the radio said, "It's going to be 35+ degrees for the next few days. There is some bad news, however...it'll mean some smog." Over 30 degrees *is* the bad news.

Meh.

I did a work trip to Victoria on Thursday... coming home on the float-plane, I could see the beautiful brown layer hovering over the lower mainland. As a kid, I used to go to the Island a lot - on the ferry coming home, you could see the brown layer, but it seemed to be mostly over Vancouver. I was (surprised, disappointed, disgusted, saddened - insert your choice of verb) to see how much it's grown.

As to the kitties - poor guys - permanent fur coat. I was sitting at my mom's last night with a freezer block on my chest (those picnic coolers aren't just for picnics anymore!) and I saw Bailey sprawled out in the living room. I got another freezer block and put it next to her on a tea towel. She didn't understand and went to huddle in a corner. Since after several minutes she hadn't gotten closer to it, I put it back in the freezer. But she found the cool spot on carpet that it left and sprawled herself over that spot. So maybe it did help after all.

I bought an air conditioner from London Grugs last summer. It keeps the room with the computer fairly cool, unless, like last night, there are a bunch of large men in the room too. Then it's a fight.

But otherwise it was a great investment of $120 or so!

I spent almost three hours sweating and swearing while installing an air conditioner in the bedroom. It was a beast to get done, but I'm glad of the results. But with this heat our little a/c unit is having a hard time handling the load.

Maybe bunking in the computer room at work is an option. I wonder how management would feel about me moving the family in.
