You know you've got one. That old laptop, so old that it's "unusable" by modern standards, but it still works, so you're reluctant to just throw it away. So there it sits, in the back of the closet or up on a high shelf, collecting dust ( Read more... )

It's not dead yet, but the screen's getting flakier and flakier; it took me the better part of an hour last night to wiggle it into working again. And today it's decided not to recognize that it has a battery. For the moment it's still usable, but I fear it's only a matter of time.

Did dear Spike finally snuff it?

Spike himself is fine, last I checked, but the external floppy drive croaked. If I can't find another "retro" laptop, I wouldn't say no to a replacement serial floppy.

Ta! Depending on make & model, I *might* have a compatible floppy drive I could swap in. A working screen, however, not so much. ;-(

I do have a Toshiba Satellite 100CS. Screen works beautifully, has a 1G hard drive, no clue on floppy but that's because I have no such thing. Never tried to boot into DOS, I do know it has Win95.

You want, 'tis yours. Would just have to find a time to either bring it out or have you come get it.

I'm apparently going to have to tear the house apart to find a power cord (I know there's at least two in here *somewhere*), but other than that, I think we have a winner! Suh-weet!

Glad you were able to find one - I'd be tempted to pass one on to you, but the kids are making good use of it when they visit. =\
