I got to watch a fair piece of Arsenal v. Cardiff City, a game Arsenal won 4-0.  What's truly noteworthy about this game was that the one player I came away most impressed with was the Cardiff goalie.  He made spectacular save after save, keeping Cardiff close for most of the match by his sheer will.  Of course, if you just look at the scoresheet, ( Read more... )

Is it necessarily true that there is NOT one "right set of ways" to look at a particular sport?

It's possible that, given enough data, you could find a way to optimize a team's performance. Would that make watching sports entertaining? Isn't Moneyball - while fascinating - the worst thing that could have happened to baseball from a strategic standpoint? I like steals. I don't particularly like walks. I like doubles and triples. I like a runner moving from first to third, from second to home, outfielders who throw the ball all over the place. Also, I like having opinions, and I like arguing about them.
Speaking of, if sportswriters don't stop being so damn sanctimonious, they will have to radically shift their notions of a Hall of Famer. Given the steroid scandal, doesn't Jamie Moyer look like a borderline HOFer right now? And Omar Vizquel?
