So after row 1 there should be 44 stitches, right?

I feel silly asking because I know it's been explained multiple times but I don't understand what I do after Row 1 (K2, yo), is Row 2 P2, yo? Then how do you avoid accumulating multiple stitches? And are you then purling the yo stitches from the row before? I know that there must be a gotcha moment where it all makes sense but I'm not there yet! Please clarify! Many thanks, Kari
