Pace, plot types, should I watch out for wank, main method of contacting other players (chat? private IM? Plurk?), is there stuff for non-combatants/kids to do? Hit me with everything you got.

Hoo boy, get ready for some tl;dr, Anon!
Pace: For the most part, Somarium is mostly medium paced, with an average of maybe 6-10 posts a day. This includes both journal posts and log posts. During application cycles and events that are held at the end of the month, the pace bumps up a bit, but it's not unmanageable. Also, a lot of the players don't mind backlogging, including me. We also have players from all over the world, and there's usually someone on to tag.
Plot: There's an overarching game plot that the mods have been bringing out these past few months, with the events occurring near the end of every month. There's also a Moon Cycle system. Basically it switches between Full Moon and New Moon every other month. During the Full Moon months, everything is all nice and happy, just like an ideal dream world. But during the New Moon months, everything starts getting a little darker. It's more based on the nightmare aspect, so the events usually tie in with that theme. There are also smaller, weekly inbetween phases. Sometimes

Application: If I'd have to rate Som's apps from a scale from 1 to 10, I'd have to give it a 5 or 6. What the mods really look for in an application is that the player not only knows the character, but can also play the character. They really want a good, solid personality section that explores everything about the character. It doesn't have to be super long, but it can't be just a short nutshell either.
The samples are another thing they really focus on. It used to be just one, but they change it to two a few months ago. In the first person sample, they want to hear the voice of the character, so mostly dialogue rather than action brackets. The third person is more for how you write and how you would convey the character's internal thoughts and actions. Both samples have prompts already provided, which are really helpful particularly for the first person. Also, they're lenient on the samples. If one sample is spot on, but the other isn't as great but not horrible, they'll go with the spot on. But if one sample is just plain

I'd read through the Complete Guide but a lot of the stuff you mentioned I find come best from a player rather than the promo materials. Thanks so much! ♥
I've been thinking on this forever but I'm just worried about falling behind orrrr not being able to break in. I'm incredibly slow and have a bad habit of falling for the huge shiny games when I want to pick up a second game. So. Basically I'm asking "what's it like?"
Application: Easy. Just remember to have a good word count from the Personality, Strengths/Weaknesses and the samples. Oh and the usual spelling/grammar and staying consistent.
Setting: Lighthearted and Pokeymans. You don't need to be canon familiar with Pokemon in order to play and there's a few players who haven't played the games either. Just be able to know how a pokemon works like evolution/moves/catching/battling and you can refer to bulbapedia or the mods if you have questions. Violence between characters and not pokemon is illegal ICly but can be and has done anyway. In general, the game keeps itself at a PG-13 feel.
Speed: Despite the amount of characters, its only about 6~10 posts a day and spikes during events and Sunday/Mondays when the new arrivals pop in. You can get away with checking only once per day and that's the beauty of it if you're slow.
Activity Check: Easy again, one network post per month with at least 10 comments on said post. The mods will only check for network posts when they put AC up so if you have

CR: Building CR can be a little touch and go -- sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard. It's not the sort of game where CR comes flooding in, but it's also not one where you have to walk over hot coals to get another character talking to yours.
Activity: Pretty easy. One network post + other (another network post, participation in a log, or a thread with 20 comments by your character, so 40 pinging back and forth.) App: Medium? My apps were: 1. Long and super-detailed and took forever, 2. Copypasta from another app, 3. Totally rushed. All of them got in without a hitch, so I can't give you a good response. Chat: We have one but we haven't been using it until recently, so it's been going through periods of super crowded and super sparse. Contact: There's a mun and mod contact page; I think most people like to be contacted by AIM. On the general, people are very easy to get in touch with. Events: Every month. Mods: I've talked to two of the three. They answer questions very quickly and clearly. Never found a time they weren't on top of things. Mood: Crack/humor, with slice of life and some seriousness that comes with various plots. Pace: Pretty fast. 8-10 posts on the network daily. Most people tag back really fast. There are usually a flood of posts around application
