My ears are full (pleasantly) of audiobooks

My youngest (now 12, soon to be 13) is a girl who talks - a lot.  This post, however, deals with the audio books I've been listening to of late.

On the whole, I enjoy hearing what she's thinking, but there are times when she wants to talk that I don't want to listen - say when I'm engaged in reading or writing.  There are other occasions when I'm ( Read more... )

I don't know if they're available as audio books, but Naomi Novik's series that starts with His Majesty's Dragon is quite good, think C. S. Forester or Patrick O'Brien with a dollop of fantasy (dragons are real, large, and sentient) mixed in.

At least 4 have been done in audio - I've downloaded one from the DC Public Library and put it into the queue for listening.

Well, since there are only four so far, that pretty well covers them. :D I find she writes a very convincing story and the battle with the sea monster in book 2 is superb.

Good to know - I won't give my daughter (or son) Tamora Pierce to read then. Not that her English is at a suitable level yet, but it's nice to have an idea what to avoid.

Audio books are a blessing - I should drop by my library to see what they have on offer, it would be perfect to have on the iPod while gardening...

It probably won't surprise you that you and I had different reactions to the Alanna series. I actually found her approach to sex (and the author's) fairly healthy. By the time she marries (in her mid-twenties), she's had sex with-IIRC-a grand total of three men, each of whom she cared for deeply (though one of whom she only knew for a short time, another was her eventual husband and the third was her best friend, the prince, whom she was seriously considering marrying). Hardly what I would consider a round-heel! In each case, she has sex because she chooses to-the man being a willing participant as well, obviously. She never has sex without being responsible about it. She never has sex with a stranger, nor does she ever have sex with someone when she didn't intend to. She never has sex without magical protection. Sounds like a fairly responsible young woman to me! But I can see that if you are ethically opposed to non-marital sex, her actions aren't terribly palatable ( ... )

Oh, and my almost-fourteen-year-old daughter is a pretty fair talker too. ;-)
