The feeling of warm fur on his hand was friendly and soothing, especially after a horribly restless sleep. He flexed his fingers a little, but not without pain, so he could feel more of the small furry mass that had made contact with him. It was wiry yet gentle at the same time

Dammit, I can’t stay here… someone might find me…

Zaku fought all the urges in his body that told him to just lie there to get up as a brief memory of having contact with a car came into his mind. Someone might come looking here for me…

Shige continued barking as Zaku found it in him to stand up, though only barely. This is ten times more painful to stand than it is to lie down. Zaku thought stubbornly to himself, trying to ignore his injuries. His whole right side ached badly, and his left knee felt as if it was going to give out from under him at any moment. He also felt a possible wound under his shirt re-opening… and he dared not to look down at the now brown splotch on his lower right torso of his white shirt…

What the hell happened? Why am I here? Now near-death, Zaku’s mind raced with questions he tried to ignore, putting all his remaining energy into walking in the opposite direction of the road so he could find a suitable resting place. He hadn’t eaten in days, and has drank only very little… only enough to get him away

There was a loud noise in his world, void of light, but it was hard to pick out what it was. He couldn't comprehend it... it was something beyond him now... but suddenly, there was a speck of light in front of him. Zaku reached for it curiously, wondering what it was
