We know how you feel... both from the early days of Zoe (and Meg before her, and Mattie after her...) and from the stage in Red-Haired Girl's life (about two) when her favorite thing, it seemed, was "runnin' away in the parkin' lot."
You'll have to make yourself believe (and I think it's true) that all WILL be OK because you ARE vigilant, and we DO live on a quiet dead-end street, and you have neighbors who WILL notice if Butter gets out, and Butter is MOST likely to come straight to Zoe's house if she goes anywhere...
Thank you. Yes, I have no doubt that she would end up at your gate should it happen again (and she probably had been at the gate just before M saw her running in the opposite direction). And yes, thank goodness for dead-end streets! She's sleeping on a chair with her giant new ball toy next to her (bigger than her head). All is well.

Isn't it amazing how they do dig in, and then you can't imagine life without them? And then they begin to torment you. So sorry for all the troubles!!
I really believe all you can do is keep watch, and keep on fixing things when the loose spots are discovered, and love your dog, and she'll always come home. And I have to say, I think both our households are lucky because we have what's probably an air-tight backup plan; if Butter doesn't come to you, she's going to come to Zoe. And vice versa. Thank goodness.
Do something extra nice for yourself today, maybe. You're such a good puppy-mommy!

Thank you for the affirmation, and yes, I think I will dip into the chocolate-covered almonds that I've been trying to forget are in the kitchen cupboard... Thank you very much for always saying just the right thing.

But it's heart-stopping, I know! Hang in there!
