Recently, I've been given a hard time for enjoying specific songs. Let me be the first to admit that I do not have an especially refined taste in music. In general, I like a lot of music, and, in many ways, I allow myself to be attracted to songs not solely based on the lyrics or the beat or the music video. I have a fairly open mind, musically ( Read more... )

NOOOO, you're not alone!!! I fell in LOVE with that song the second I saw the music video (which was also the first time I'd heard the song)--it made me cry. And I still cry every time I watch the music video. All of the different parts are great, but the one that hits closest to him for me is the girl who finally jumps into the swimming pool. Gah, it's just such a feel-good song with catchy tune and the music video is just so GOOD! People who don't like this song (or at least don't admit that the video is great) suck. :P

no, you're not wrong -- i didn't like the song very much when i heard it on the radio, but then i went and watched the music video, and it's pretty clear that she's just trying to do something fundamentally *good* with this song, which i respect her for (which is not something i can say about any of her other songs). anyway, i like it better now, and i wish more "stupid katy perry songs" had such a positive message.

I gather you're not such a fan of some of her, ahem, earlier work?

I don't like "Firework," but I also don't think it's a stupid song.

Anyone who ridicules you probably likes or has been touched by a different pop hit.
Mine is "Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson.

This was the first time that I'd heard the song, and hearing it along with the video, it is a wonderful song! I don't know if I would feel differently if I had heard it on the radio, but it clearly has a positive, uplifting message that lots of people need. Some of the firework shooting looks a little funny, but that doesn't relate to the meaning. So no, I think it is a more special song!

As someone whose taste for deep, complex, original music has been developing and causing his interest in the mainstream to atrophy for nearly a decade (in other words, as definitely something of a music snob :P ), that's a good song. The lyrics and video have a nice message, and they're a breath of fresh air compared to the usual pop themes. Granted, the *approach* to this message isn't as interesting as I would like (and the music itself is unremarkable), but the song still garners respect from me. I suspect that you shouldn't pay attention to those who would ridicule you for liking it.
