Laundry...but not today

It's a bad day for drying laundry...again. D:
At least we have clean clothes. I'm not sure how people dry laundry here in the winter, though. Line-drying never worked well in Michigan winters. On top of that, we won't have central heating. How do you do it, Japan? How do you do it?

....No central heating? We barely survived with low-heat (heater set to 52) during the winter in VIRGINIA. It was so cold that I would curl up under blankets in my chair and not move @_@

How are you going to deal with no central heating??? O_o

Well, the Japanese usually deal with it by preparing their kotatsu (short-legged, curtained tables with space heaters behind the curtains) and just piling on the clothes and sitting with your feet folded under the table (or, in the case of children, just playing under the table). Also, they use space heaters (traditionally kerosene heaters, but electric ones are becoming more popular) and have meals that are cooked at the table in nabe pots. I know Nat's going to hate it. She doesn't usually like mildly cool days. I love the winter, though. The severity of the winter in Japan largely depends on where you are, though...and I not always latitude (we're at about the same latitude as mid-northern North Carolina, but our climate has a closer resemblance to Michigan's or Ohio's...but with a rainy season in May or June and the occasional typhoon ( ... )

Well, having survived winter in the Shanghai part of China, where it averages 40 degrees F and raining the whole season, and NO CENTRAL HEATING/AC, I completely understand! First off, I hope you brought plenty of thermal underwear or can buy it there (it would have been impossible for me since I'm a "big" girl). They had these cute little electric hot water bottles you could get in flea markets in China. Maybe as winter sets in, you'll be able to find them??

About the clothes drying. Aren't there rails to hang your clothes out the windows of your flat?? If I didn't have those, I never would have been able to do laundry! Gotta do it in the morning and hang 'em up before 8 or 9 so that you can fold them by sundown! ^_^ And hangers. Lots of hangers. I should have brought one pants hanger home with me. It was such a neat little contraption!

Hmmm...I should suggest the thermal underwear to Nat.

Our laundry poles/lines are on our balcony (all we have for windows are sliding doors and the previous tenant may not have liked/understood the poles). My concern is that winter is supposed to get below freezing here (we've heard there are possibilities of waist-high snows) and the clothes would freeze instead of drying.
