Warning: Rant Ahead

How on Earth did the free world come together and decide to award something as uniting and powerful as the Olympics on a country that is in no way deserving of them on many points? It is shameful and the nations who are giving this a free pass should be throughly ashamed and disgusted with themselves ( Read more... )

All valid points about how much China sucks, but I thought the point of the Olympics was just for everybody to shut up for a few minutes and play ball, and then immediately return to hating each other. 8(

If you just look at the sporting events, sure. But you have to consider the ENTIRE picture, too. The Olympics bring a great deal of money and social clout to the country that is hosting them. By ignoring China's issues it is allowing them to hold the events up as a 'see, the world approves and supports us' in their media and gives them a large platform on which to pontificate. And, like I said before, a LOT of money.

But the Olympic committee has already decided. And I bet the bribes were pretty sweet. Besides, as an international organization, I figure the Olympic committee is made up of a bunch of liberal sissies who are lining up to kiss the ass of any non-Western power that cares to present their bum for kissing. Just like most other international organizations.

The vote on where the next Olympics, I think is decided just a few days/weeks (or before) the current Olympics which was Athens 2004 wasn't it (since Sydney was 2000)? Though I kinda do agree with you about China's little upheaval going wrong just to prepare with the Olympics, but of course I really don't know the whole story about the demolishing the buildings to make room for stadiums and residents. From the people's point of view, it seems the government is just using everything in their power just to make space. I know the whole story about Tibet.

I know about how you feel, but sadly money talks big in this world. -.-

Nice to hear one of my friends come out and vocally object to this travesty. Rigth now I think that the best thing for the US to do, is the follow France's lead in boycotting the opening ceromony.

But our atheletes should go, they can show (perhaps wear) visable symbols supporting the Tibetian people and they really need to stamp their Chinese competition flat!

So, you agree with peace through force and censorship? You think a communist society, where you're told who it's okay to worship, what it's okay to say and think, and where it's okay to go, is better than ours? I'd rather live in a screwed up country where I'm at least free to talk about how screwed up my country is, then live in a place like China, where if you had made a post like the one you just did, blasting the country, you'd probably 'disappear'. That is, if you could even get your internet to load a blog page.

I'm well aware that a lot of the things in China are blown out of proportion, but I'm also aware that the government there has its fingers in everything and doesn't ever let anything work without their approval. They're a communist society and frankly I'm scared to death of them, because if they ever wanted to go to war, they have the willingness and sheer numbers to overrun any other country on Earth.

All that aside, I don't agree with the Olympics being held there and hope it doesn't happen again for a long, long

In China you are not told who it is ok to worship, you are not told what is ok to say and think, and you are not told where it is ok and not ok to go. Those are all vast misconceptions and western anti-china propaganda. You talk about things being "blown out of proportion", well those things all fall well into that category. 40 years ago? Even 30 years ago? Those things were much more true. Today, not the case. Go over there and see for yourself. You'll find, like I have, that the way China is today is not the way it was during or after the People's Revolution. It is far closer to a capitalist society than a communist society ( ... )
