Adam stole a glance at Kris, sitting against the sofa, his head in his hands - naked and beautiful and hurting. He wanted to gather Kris into his arms but he was suddenly afraid. Had Adam’s dream just ended, his hope of finding that one true love that would last forever been shattered? He felt himself shaking and scolded himself. At this point in his life, he could have almost anyone he wanted. Why did this one man matter so much? What would he do if it was over?

Kris let out a sigh, and then something resembling a laugh escaped from him. “I told her,” he said. “I warned her, but she wouldn’t listen.”

Adam figured Kris was seeing his marriage go up in flames, the love of his life about to be gone. And it was all his fault.

Kris continued, looking Adam square in the eyes. “Do you know why she wouldn’t listen?”

“I suppose she was willing to try anything to keep you.”

Kris moved his head in the negative. “No, that wasn’t it at all, but you never caught on. She was so hung up on you, she wanted to make this move to get near you.”

Adam couldn’t believe his ears. “No way, she loves you, Kris.”

“She did. But after that day we spent together at our house, something changed. She was almost depressed till you actually followed through with the house-hunting thing. Then she came alive. That’s when I was pretty sure it wouldn’t work out. She was hanging her hopes on a guy who loves guys.” Kris paused, wet his lips, and went on. “Hanging her hopes on a guy who doesn’t just love guys - on a guy who loves me. At least, I hope so.” He looked into Adam’s eyes, begging him to say what he wanted to hear.

Adam did love Kris - but could it ever be true that Kris loved him back - in a “lifetime” kind of way and not just for the thrill of the forbidden and the pure joy of the sex? “You know I love you. I guess I’m the one who’s always wanted to know that you love me and I’ve been too scared to ask you.”

“You - frightened of anything! Not Adam Lambert.”

“Frightened of losing you. Why else would I agree to this crazy arrangement, if not to be with you when I can?”

Kris paused a long time before answering, recalling something from the past. “Adam, do you remember the night during Idol when I sang Falling Slowly? Do you remember what you said to me after the performance?”
Adam remembered that night like it was yesterday. He’d had such a tough time concentrating on his own song because Kris had completely floored him. The longing, the utter want that came through his voice, the ragged emotions. Adam took the time to remember him, singing:

I don't know you But I want you All the more for that
Words fall through me And always fool me And I can't react
And games that never amount To more than they're meant Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice You'll make it now

Adam had been undone. He’d heard the words as if Kris was singing them to him, even though he had known those words, that emotion, was all for Katy.

Adam cleared his throat, unsure how he’d sound when he spoke. “I remember telling you I’d never heard a song that did to me what that song did. I remember saying that was where you would beat me on American Idol - your ability to connect with your feelings and bring your audience along. Is that what you mean.”

Kris nodded. “That, and you said one more thing. You said Katy was a lucky woman to have her man love her like that. Do you remember?”

“I remember. So what does that have to do with this?”

Kris got up off the floor and took Adam’s hands in his, helping him up. Adam felt himself pulled in close to Kris, their skin touching, Kris resting his head against Adam's chest. There were no words for a while, and Adam realized what a gift Kris had for the dramatic pause. It certainly worked well for him in his music.

Kris pulled Adam down more to his own height, so he could speak directly into Adam’s ear. “That night, I wasn’t singing for Katy,” he said, warm breath puffing into Adam’s ear. Adam felt a shiver right down to his groin. Kris began to kiss his ear, caress it, make love to it with his soft tongue and Adam grabbed on tight to his hair as if to hold himself up. “Every word, every phrase, I was thinking of you. That’s what you did to me. That’s what you will always do to me.”

_____________

Finally they were talking about the subject they had managed to avoid, talking about their lives and their futures together. There was no question of being apart, putting on any masquerades. They were in love, and there was no way to keep from hurting Katy. Honesty was the least hurtful thing.

“I think we can give her two choices with what to do with this,” Kris said. “I mean, she did just move out here, all this way. We can let her stay, be part of this odd arrangement, as long as she understands that you and I are together, that I’ll be moving in to your part of the house and sharing your bed. We could see if she still wants to join us once in a while, but otherwise just live together as friends if that will work.”

Adam was skeptical. “I can’t imagine that she’d ever agree to being the third wheel.  Getting the crumbs off the table, so to speak.”

Kris looked at Adam incredulously. “That’s what you were willing to do, to have me.”

It was true. That was how much Adam loved Kris. Maybe they should be willing to give Katy the same choice. “And the second option?”

Kris said, “Pretty straightforward, I guess. Divorce, she goes back to Arkansas and lets us be together. I mean, I’d take good care of her, give her half of anything I make over this whole Idol success. After all, she encouraged me, she supported me the whole way.”

“Only fair,” Adam agreed, and then got that little arrogant smirk on his face. “Besides, I’ll make enough money for both of us.”

Kris’s cell phone buzzed. “It’s Katy.”

Adam prepared to get up off the sofa, give them some space to talk, but Kris held him in place. “This is about all of us.”

Kris didn’t do much talking, though. Katy seemed to have a lot to say, and when Kris hung up the phone he told Adam, “She’s taking a day or two so she can sort through this. She’s found a place to stay.”

Adam’s eyes twinkled. “At least a whole day to ourselves. What could we possibly do with it?”

Kris just shook his head. “You are so horny, man. Don’t you ever think of anything but sex?”

Adam looked offended. “Maybe I wasn’t thinking of sex. At least not only sex. Think back to every stupid interview you’ve ever done. Anybody ever ask you the old cliché, ‘What’s your perfect Sunday?’”

“A couple of times.”

“Well, I’m asking you. What’s your perfect Sunday.”

Kris thought a while. “Here in LA? Probably visit the beach. That would be cool.”

Adam raised an eyebrow. “Cool, indeed, in October. You aren’t talking about swimming in the ocean, are you?”

“Not swimming. You know, cheesy stuff: walking along the sand, holding hands, listening to the waves. I love waves.”

“Me, too. What else?”

Kris got an idea. “I’ve never been to Griffith observatory. I’ve always wanted to go.”

“That’s a night trip,” Adam said. “You’ve got to see LA at night from up there. What do you say we do your perfect Sunday things, and then let me pick one place to go, too?” Adam felt himself grinning way too much.

He thought Kris looked  worried at that suggestion.

Adam set to work, calling in a favor from a friend with a condo on a private beach. There was no need to invite picture taking at a public place. They hadn’t talked with Katy yet; she didn’t need to see them in a newspaper, holding hands and sucking face like teenagers. Which was exactly what Adam intended to do for this perfect Sunday: listen to the pounding surf; smell the salt-water in the air; and do one of those movie-moment body-clutching rolls in the sand.

Adam knew Kris expected him to try more than this, make it all about sex so he was determined to have a tender, romantic day together. The idea was intriguing and very arousing.

By the time they gazed together at the spectacle of Los Angeles at night from Griffith Observatory, Adam had second thoughts about his choice of place, coming next. But not one to chicken out of anything, he drove Kris to that special club he loved so much, where the people knew and loved him long before he was a star.

He could tell by Kris’s eyes that he knew what this place was. “You’ve bringing me to a gay bar?” he asked incredulously.

“You have a problem with that?”

“I thought we were trying not to call any attention to ourselves just yet.”

“That’s no problem at all,” Adam assured him. “These people are my friends, I can trust them. And frankly,” he added with a grin, “there’s not much I could do here that would raise an eyebrow.”

Adam loved this place. Everybody greeted him like family, and he made introductions all around although it was hardly necessary. Kris seemed to have as many men fans as Adam did.

They took a spot at a booth and Adam spied Kris looking around, taking it all in. There were signs that regular restaurant-style booths weren’t the only offerings here. Adam saw Kris watching a couple heading for a back area of the bar, a place where there were private booths with closed doors. He knew what Kris was thinking, and just waved a finger at him with an “uh, uh - we’re not going there.”

“Oh, really? You’ve been so gentle all day, I  figured you were saving up for some big-time banging in a kinky place.”

Adam shrugged his shoulders. “Not really.” Then he did what he’d been dreaming about all day - just leaning in, taking Kris’s mouth in his, taking him hard on the mouth like there was no tomorrow. Kris opened his mouth up to Adam’s tongue, allowing his deep exploration, his very public display of affection, not wanting it to end. Adam moaned. “Oh, Kris, this is what I’ve been looking forward to all day. Bringing you here, where I’m known, and showing my friends I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

Kris nuzzled into Adam’s neck. “Kinda marking your territory, in other words.”

“You better believe it.”

__________

By the time they were finally driving home, Adam could tell this restraint had paid off. Kris was mad with desire for him, and miles still from their house Kris was unbuttoning Adam’s pants, rubbing his hands across his stomach, reaching down to grab hold of the prize. Adam unconsciously hit the gas a little too hard, urging the car home at unsafe speeds.

They left a trail of clothes to the bedroom and Adam’s restraint was finally gone. He slammed Kris down on the bed and pinned him roughly, hungrily possessing his mouth while his hands began to explore Kris’s perfect skin, his solid chest, his firm abs, his hard cock. He began a rhythmic movement, his hands stroking up and down, up and down, as his mouth moved south to meet his hands. When he took Kris’s cock into his mouth he didn’t do it as gently as usual. He was just so crazy for him, and he realized he may have used some teeth when Kris let out a little cry. “I’m sorry, baby,” he moaned. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You always hurt me good,” Kris replied breathlessly. “Hurt me some more.”

“Oh, no,” Adam said as he opened Kris up. “I will never hurt you. Never. I will always love you and care for you.”

Adam again reached for restraint. Their movement together was perfect, their fucking sweet, their orgasm monstrous. Adam lay panting across his lover, his friend, and wondered how life could be any better.

_______

Adam tried to rouse himself from sleep but he was still dazed, cloudy. He nuzzled up against Kris, assuring himself that his man was still in his bed. He was right there, tousled hair, a bit of drool on the side of his mouth. Adam couldn’t resist lapping it up and taking Kris’s mouth in his half-awake, half-asleep state and it only took a moment for Kris’s response to kick in. And only a moment for them both to register that they were being watched.

Katy was there. Just standing in the doorway, waiting for them to awaken. Adam was flustered, and started to get out of bed quickly. “No, Adam, stay where you are,” Katy said quietly. “No need to wake up so fast.” Then she walked around to Kris’s side of the bed and climbed under the covers with them - pausing to take a good long look under the sheets first and sigh a longing sigh.

Katy snuggled up next to Kris and held him for the longest time. Adam wondered if she learned the art of dramatic pause from Kris, or if it was the other way around. Finally she spoke to Kris. “You’ll never guess who called me yesterday, right after I left here in a huff.”

Kris gave her a quizzical look and she answered, “Jerry.”

Kris nodded and informed Adam, “My best friend in high school. The three of us always hung together.”

Katy continued. “He didn’t want to interrupt us during all that idol craziness, but he was concerned, wanted to see how we were doing. Said something about how you could never hide anything and he was convinced he watched you fall in love with Adam right in front of his eyes on camera. Of course, I spilled the beans on everything.”

Kris’s eyes widened. “And?”

“And we talked and talked, and I realized this isn’t me,” Katy made an “everything” motion to take in Adam, the big house, and LA in general. “The music business, making it big, that was always your dream Kris, not mine. I don’t fit. I wouldn’t fit if Adam hadn’t gone and made you crazy for him. Things were always going to change when you won this damn contest.”

Kris nodded. He’d known for a while, but was glad she’d come to the conclusion on her own. “So what now?” He asked. “You know I’ll take care of you. There’s no one more responsible for my success than you, and I owe you everything.”

Katy smiled, her big eyes liquid pools about to leak. “Your talent, your gift, is your own. You don’t owe me anything. I’m still young, I’ll make a good life.” A look of mischief played on the corners of those big eyes. “Maybe you don’t realize that I get nearly as much fan mail as you guys, most of it from young single men who think I’m prettier than Reese Witherspoon. I think I’ll be fine.” She leaned down and gave Kris a light brush of her lips against his. “I’ll get my things soon. I think Jerry’s going to fly out and help. I love you both - be happy together.”

With a wink and a little hug, she was gone - from their bed, from their lives. All Adam could say was, “Damn, I love that woman. But not as much as I love you.”

Falling slowly, eyes that know me; And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough, And warred with yourself It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody I'll sing along

Finally, the real finale.
