Nothing is wrong, per SE, with public tailing. It just tends to draw unnecessary attention, which is awkward if you don't enjoy unnecessary attention. Afterwards, the level of unusual that's generated generates a sense of awkwardness and discomfort, which devolves into fear and nonunderstanding. For some people, it would be like if someone walked around in public in full S&M gear (which I know happens, but still). I don't know.
Too bad you didn't get more of a chance to converse with them, you could have slipped in a subtle plug for WCOTP.
Which actually makes the incident even funnier when looked at from the opposite angle. Here's a bunch of furries who just encountered a decently known artist of the genre and never even knew it. I wonder how many times that's happened to unsuspecting people.
This event could have also been made funnier if he had your art tattooed onto him. Imagine seeing your art inked on a total stranger's flesh! I suppose it happens too.....
To be fair, they might know him under a different name (if they even have namebadges there). I know I don't know what most fandom people look like off the top of my head.
That said, I did run into a member of the fandom at a local grocery store, without any accessories. It was an interesting experience.
There's also a difference between being completely serious about a topic, and being downright silly about it. And the ability to tell the difference between the two is kinda easy.
If that was going to happen it would have looong ago.
LULZ, CYD, etc. have been advertising where Jim works for months. Zippo from all that. Maybe they know that ticking off somebody where there is a security team is a bad idea.

I suppose there is the old fall back, "Is it true you do it doggy-style so you can both watch Jeopardy at the same time?"

You know, you've just practically invited every furry in the Madison area to come tail trolling your Sam's(tm)?
