Lovely. Not only did this leave me wanting to read Himmelfarb's book; it also made me wish you had already written "George Eliot in Frankfurt".

(Side note: I remember thinking briefly about Daniel Deronda when my bechor was born, since [IIRC] it briefly mentions a character named Kalonymus.)

That's going to be a major research project, I think. I hope Prof. Himmelfarb will be able to advise me, but she's retired now.

The New York Public Library has a volume of notes from GE's research for Daniel Deronda. Right now it's on display as part of the hundredth anniversary of the library, but after December you could probably see it in the special collections department.
