If we get something that looks like the House healthcare bill I'll be very pleased indeed. If we also get the climate change bill that's been around for a few months, then I'll be overjoyed. Neither are perfect, but both go a good ways towards making the US an actual first world nation and not the wretched plutocracy it's been for the past 30 years. The fact that both of these are not just possible, but maybe even likely is amazing.

Agreed. I'm not giving up hope until (and if) the public option dies. If working health care is his sole accomplishment (aside from the not-Bush thing) as US President, it still singlehandedly validates his first term IMHO.

I am enough of a surly leftist to be quite unhappy that we're not getting anything near as helpful as single-payer, as the Franco-Canadian-British model, but enough of a Democrat to be glad that the public-option-enabled plan looks very likely to pass.

Making fun of happenings in the house is one of my favorite hobbies because the place is a circus, and it seems like your average representative is a sub-moronic troglodyte, but it took them a few weeks to pass a healthcare bill with the public option that 55% of Americans is in favor of (I'm sure the statistic would be higher if more Americans knew what a "public option" was) whereas the senate, small and manageable as it is, has already been bought up entire by the health insurance industry and it will be a miracle if they pass any kind of bill with a public option in it.

I heard before that for the first year he had to follow the budget left by Bush, does that mean he's on his own now?

Well, if that's true (not saying it isn't, I just have no idea), then that'll probably either expire on the anniversary of his taking office (rather than election), or at the end of the fiscal year (usually July, though whether that's coming or gone would depend on how far in advance the budget is fixed).

But yeah- happy anniversary indeed!

It has not been a full year. he took office Jan 20 2009. Krinn is apparently in with the crowd who gives Obama the credit for the first round of bank bailouts, you know, the larger one where the money just disappeared with no accountability under the Bush administration.

One would have thought, with as valuable as it was at the beginning, he would have charged more for it, but then you can start extending the metaphors out to stimulus bills and other spending and it gets messy. Best not to.
