I've considered doing this. But not with notes or letters. Just one note about the traveling book, and making a Facebook page for the people who have had the book to post on.
In all seriousness, I once saw a recommendation for beginning authors to intentionally leave their books at places like bus stops so that someone might read it, enjoy it, and tell others.
