Tentatively beginning to listen to music with an ear to DJing again. Exploring resources related to the software I plan to use, Ableton Live, and I learned something interesting last night ( Read more... )

Yep, that is pretty much the breaks when it comes to using Ableton.

You might want to look into this: http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/dj/traktor-scratch-pro/

As it's a bit closer to the vinyl experience than Ableton, in terms of being more spontaneous and tactile, etc. You can play with or without the control vinyl (many people seem to have dumped the control vinyl I've noticed).

Yeah, I used to think that would be the way to go. But for whatever reason, I don't want to go back to vinyl at this point. Too heavy maybe? ;-)

I think it's also that I hope to get into remixing-producing and would tend to do that live rather than in the studio (should I ever get good enough), and Ableton seems to lend itself well to that.
