Steampunk Convention...and comments about Furry

Had a blast yesterday at a new Steampunk event in Daytona.  I put together a little outfit with some things that I already had...nothing elaborate, and certainly not anything expensive...created a character that was, for lack of a better idea, a dirigible attendant.  White shirt, black vest with my silver pocketwatch, khaki slacks, and black shoes ( Read more... )

More than once I've tried to be friendly with a group of people I didn't know at a con, only to be rebuked and shown obvious disinterest in my presence there. So lately I usually don't bother, and stick primarily with my friends ( ... )

I know I have been actively trying to bring furry back into its roots in the sci-fi fandom here in ABQ which has a sci-fi con that is almost as old as myself. I held a furry room party at the con which was very warmly received. I know that many sci-fi regulars like to attend my furmeets as well.

What we talked about tonight really opened up my eyes on how we all represent ourselves to the rest of the geekdom world. I've seen the behaviors that you described, but never really gave it some hard thought until now. For me, I go to cons not to just meet up with friends and make new connections, but to enjoy and contribue to this great fandom we call furry. Even though most of my interests side with the fursuits in performance and construction, I do appreciate and respect the other facets in our fandom. Because at the end of the day, it's about the anthropomorphic arts ( ... )

When I first started going to cons, I did it specifically to meet like-minded people. Back in 2000-2001, this was much easier for me as the fandom was much smaller and a larger segment of it seemed to be composed of people who were interested, to some extent, in the more spiritual side. I met plenty of people in the first few years, but after about 2003-2004, the size of conventions just exploded. The flood of new people in the fandom seemed to contain a much smaller portion of people who shared my interests, and the dynamic of conventions changed for me. These days, when I do make it to a con, I end up hanging out with friends pretty much exclusively. New people I meet are introduced to me or are attending the room parties I go to (room parties hosted or attended by people I already know). I find it difficult to find common interests with the majority of convention attendees these days. I enjoy the art, I very much enjoy performance, and I love fursuits. I'm not an artist, and it seems that suiting has become less about performing ( ... )

Hey now, for what it's worth, there was also an anime con going on in Tampa this past weekend, and there were some furries at that. In fact for the number of anime or other fandom conventions I go to, I tend to see at least a handful of furries at them ( ... )
