hey this looks wonderful and I just recently found a free knit pattern online for a tote! I've asked to join and I hope I can hold off until January to start on the tote. Also hope I can make it! LOL But it looks pretty easy, at least from what I've seen of the pattern so far. Thanks for the head's up!
Oh, Kristi, I have a question and you're the best person I know to ask. Since I'm such a new beginner, if I see that someone has a sale on yarn (someone online, that is, like an online store), how do I know what that yarn is good for? I know there are different weights of yarn, but I just don't know them yet. I was looking through the tote group site and saw a notice about some yarn being on sale and went there and saw another yarn on sale, but have no clue what it is.
Is there a way to know this? Is there a website that might explain it or something? I feel like such a fool, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere.
Most books have a guide either early on or in the back. Really, almost any yarn *can* be used for anything, but you might not *want* to use it for specific things. Like, finering weight (quite fine yarn) is recommended to be knit on US 1-4 needles depending upon the fiber content and the manufacturer. It's awesome for socks, thinner mitterns, lighter weight baby sweaters. It even makes great adult sweaters, but it would very time consuming to knit at a guage of about 7 sts/in for a adult size sweater

Thanks! this is great help! I do have one knitting book now, so I can check there first and your google idea was also a great one. If I get stuck, you'll hear from me! thanks again! *hugs*
Oh yea, http://www.yarnstandards.com also gives a brief rundown on the weights and the typical needle sizes and gauges so that might help you out a bit as well.
Thank you so much for the link. I have been feeling really inspired by DJ pettit's totes. I am hoping to get into her class at Artfiberfest and then I want to use what I learned to make a tote! I am DYING for an art tote! I have bookmarked tote-along!
