RIP Arthur C. Clarke 1917-2008

Mar 18, 2008 20:09

as reported by CNN and MSNBC. (the date will actually be listed as the 19th, because it was 1:30a "tomorrow" at his time of death.) i find it interesting that CNN files it under "showbiz/books," while MSNBC has it under "technology&science/space."

like both ladyeuthanasia and lauracory, my first book by him was childhood's end, read when i was still very much a child ( Read more... )

Well, as both a science-fiction author and the mind behind the telecommunications satellite, I can see both listings as sensible.

Clarke and Gygax already... it's gonna be a long year.

i agree. it's just that when deciding where to file a story they can only pick one, since they're not in the habit of filing duplicates, and it seems they used different criteria to choose which one they deemed "stronger." i was mildly amused.

both websites had a blurb near the top of their front page, mind you: it was just what folder the main article was in that differed.

yeah.

it's been a while, though, so perhaps it's due for a re-read since i do own it.

The Passing of One of My Heroes: Sir Arthur C. Clarke anonymous March 20 2008, 06:07:18 UTC
Least us not forget the influence Sir Arthur C. Clarke had on the late movie director Stanley Kurbick. The 1968 premier of 2001: A Space Odyssey was (and still is) the most authentic space themed science fiction film. Heck, both the US and the Soviet Union built non-commercial versions of the winged Pan Am shuttle seen in the film. Sadly, the other infrastructure - the Hilton space station, the Clavius moon base and the Discovery interplanetary spaceship were lost to other distractions ( ... )

Sir Clarke's influence was indeed far-reaching. He will be missed by a much wider group of world citizens than just the SF-readers.

Hello, Anonymous! Do I know you, or are you someone "new" to my LJ? You didn't sign your name. Perhaps you were logged out by accident, or perhaps you're a wanderer, just passing by and without an account.

On a personal note, I use "Clarke's Law" as my sig line on everything from message boards to screen savers. :)

Since every one is talking about kids it sounds like that in a couple of years all of Gaz's parents and aunites are going to have to get together in the middle of her childhood and presnet her with Chilhood's end.
