wow, those pics are gorgeous! New Zealand looks like the most beautiful place in the world. No wonder they filmed LOTR there...!

The two concrete shelters at the bottom of the tunnel at Godley Head were actually for searchlights. The gun emplacements were up above.

Apparently the searchlights were carbon filament and the carbon rods had to be replaced about every 45 minutes during operation!

Ah! Like carbon-arc film projectors ... which I've had the opportunity to operate once or twice. You spend your time adjusting the rods to make sure they are pointed at each other and remain the right distance apart (not too close and not too far). There's a mechanism that slowly moves the rods closer, as they burn, but it's not perfect so you have to keep an eye on it. And since you project in 20 minute reels, on two projectors, you can replace the rods on the off projector if it doesn't look long enough to last for 20 minutes.

Mi ĵaluzetas pri la rubujo kaj enfluejo. Tiaj urbaj ornamaĵoj certe devas plibeligi vivon por tiuj loĝantoj.

That's a lot of pictures to sort through and update! Beautiful too. Maybe we could get together and do a coffee table type travel book of trashcans and toilets of the world. No Dumping!
