Art improvement meme: part 1

Jun 03, 2013 19:20

Manna posted an art improvement meme and it was so glorious that I decided to jump on the bandwagon. I'm planning to split this into 3-4 parts, though it will probably take me a few days to post each part because I'm still photographing/scanning some of my old artwork.

Slow connections beware. There are a lot of images under the cut.

Art from 1999 - 2002, age 10-13 )

meme, i was a dumb kid, pokemon, this post is too long, art

I like that on the Sunflora picture, the sun even has a Sunflora face.

Your art is gorgeous.

At the time I was really annoyed that my mother gave the sun a Sunflora face. I was all "You can't do that. Suns don't have faces! >:o " Thankfully, now that I'm older, I can see the beauty of the Sunflora sun.

Inorite? I plan to submit it to the Guggenheim soon so the entire world can see my Pokemon masterpieces!

I'm weeping with the MS Paint flash back... ^__^
//hugs\\

I'm not brave enough to let mine see the light of day. Presuming I could do anything with that obsolete stack of floppies I can't read.

I was laughing so hard while looking through all my old MS Paint art. The worst part is that I didn't stop using MS Paint until 2003 or 2004. There will be more MS Paint art in part 2.

I look forward to it. Your stuff is leagues above mine. Though I was not as keen on that airbrush tool ;)

THE AIRBRUSH CAN BE USED FOR EVERYTHING!

IT DOES CLOUDS.
IT DOES GAS.
IT DOES GRASS.

CAN'T THINK OF A BACKGROUND? SLAP SOME AIRBRUSH ON THERE.

This is the best post ever.

I gotta say, I'm completely impressed with 11-year old you and the unique poses you used! When I was younger I just drew pictures verbatim to my references and didn't do much straying from that. Pretty much everything you drew wasn't a stock pose and I think that's awesome :)

Also, your mom's Sunflora about to step on the little one may have cause me to snort out loud.

Hehe thanks.

I drew a lot of stock poses when I first got into Pokemon, but that was mostly because all I had to work off of at the time were the sprites in Pokemon Blue (which were terrible) and the limited Sugimori artwork in my Blue manual. I had no idea what most Pokemon looked like from alternate angles. As soon as I got Pokemon Stadium and could see the Pokemon models from all angles, I was like "screw this, generic poses are boring. I'm making my own!"

Ironically, I'm back to "using stock poses/photographic references" with a lot of my current artwork because I am trying to brush up on anatomy/perspective and, short of drawing from a live model, copying from photographs is the one way I can learn that type of thing.

At that age I was still learning how to draw stick figures
Trust me, there is a reason I only drew animals when I was a kid.

Part 2 will have my first attempts at drawing people... and wow, they are terrible!

Ahaha, this post is great! I actually think it's pretty fun looking at kids' drawings. We were so...I don't know, unrestrained, I guess? We weren't aware of what we were and weren't capable of, and somehow that's really great. They're silly drawings, but they're cute and amusing!

Someday I should scan all my old Pokémon art!

I shouldn't show you my MS Paint drawings, though. When I was like twelve, I was legitimately good at MS Paint and I still look back and go, "HOW DID I HAVE THIS KIND OF PATIENCE?"

Your commentary makes me laugh, too. :'D

Yes, do it!

I would love to see your MS Paint drawings too. I am highly impressed by anyone who has the patience and skills to use MS Paint as a legitimate art program. Seeing my uncle's work with MS Paint is one of the reasons I kept trying to learn how to use it (despite the fact that I sucked).

I'll dig it up! Considering my age at the time, it's not that bad.

I wish I still could use MS Paint like I did! The sizes are extremely tiny because LOL old computer resolutions, but here are a few of them:

Done with MOUSE and MS Paint. O___o;

That shading! I tried to shade like that on MSP a few times, but I only got halfway through shading the character before I said "screw this, I'm using a different program!"

I think this is the farthest I ever got on MS Paint shading:
