Summary: 'He *is* my world, Carson wanted to tell her'
The problem with agreeing to help out at another planet's hospital, Carson thought, was that he could never find the bathrooms without a guide. Considering he'd been in the Ellarians' hospital for the past two days, you'd think he'd know where it was now. Glancing at the almost-Cyrillic writing on the doors, Carson hoped he'd see something familiar. He really missed the universal (at least on Earth, which meant it wasn't really universal) symbols for men and women on bathroom doors.
Passing another door, Carson stopped, his brain telling him that he could not have seen what it had just seen. Carson turned around and went back, looking at the patient's name. The Ellarian writing was undecipherable, but printed underneath, in shaky handwriting, as if the writer were unfamiliar with the Phonecian alphabet, were the words "SHEPPARD JOHN". More writing was beneath it - but Carson only saw the name.
Carson eased the door to the room open, looking inside, trying not to hope. The patient came into view, and he let out the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. His face was paler and thinner, and his hair longer that when Carson had last seen him, but that was John in the bed. John, who'd been missing for three months, his F-302 disappearing from Atlantis' sensors during a firefight with the Pegasus Replicators, with no trace of him seen since, despite Colonel Caldwell and Major Lorne orchestrating a massive search operation.
"This is one of our hlatzy alay," a soft voice behind him said. Turning, Carson saw the dark-haired nurse - Zelina - who had been helping him the day before. "Our unknown ones. He was found next to a crashed vehicle three moons ago. He hasn't woken up since," she added, slipping past Carson into the room. Zelina adjusted the IV line and the monitor leads gently, and Carson walked over to the side of the bed, reaching down to take John's lax wrist in his hand, feeling the fluttering of John's pulse.
"Do you know him?" Zelina asked.
"Aye," Carson said. "He's from our world." He *is* my world, Carson wanted to tell her, but few people on Atlantis knew of his relationship with John. Of the people on the Ellarian mission, only Rodney and Radek knew. He wasn't sure he wanted anyone else to know just yet.
Zelina smiled at Carson. "Oh, I am so glad. We've asked just about everyone who came from off world about him, but no one knew him or the words on his neck chain." She frowned. "Well, I thought Commander Kolya recognized him, but he claimed he did not."
Carson's blood chilled. "Kolya?"
Zelina nodded. "He was here, trading for medical supplies, about two moons ago."
Kolya's men had tried to take Atlantis less then a month ago. No wonder the commander had seemed so confident. He'd known John wasn't there to lead the opposition. Carson allowed himself a tight smile. Kolya had greatly underestimated Rodney, Radek, and Major Lorne, though. He wouldn't make that mistake again, Carson was sure.
"What is his name?" Zelina was asking Carson.
"John Sheppard. The words you copied from his neck chain are his name, in our language."
Zelina nodded. "Well, now that you are here, perhaps he will awaken." She glanced at where Carson's hand had involuntarily moved down to hold John's. "Are you his clzny?" she asked.
Carson looked down at their joined hands. No, he wasn't John's husband. They'd never discussed vows or commitment or anything beyond day to day. They just simply were.
"I am," Carson found himself saying. He was the closest thing to John's family, after all. It would make things a great deal easier too. The Ellarians put a great store on marriage. As a spouse, Carson would have greater rights over John's care than he would have as his doctor. There was no court system here that could override a spouse's decision if another family member didn't agree, assuming the patient couldn't make a decision for themselves. A parent held those rights until a person married, but John didn't have any living parents, and Carson wasn't about to leave him as a ward of the Ellarian medical system.
Though, Carson had to admit, the real reason behind his white lie was that he wanted to be John's husband.
Zelina smiled. "It is good you are here then."
Carson sat down on the edge of the bed, still holding John's hand. He brought it up to his lips and pressed a kiss to the pale skin. "Aye, it is," he said softly.
"I'll leave you two alone. Call me when you wish to contact your people," Zelina said, slipping out of the room.
Carson would contact them first, so that no one would be surprised if the doctors mentioned John and Carson being married. Rodney wouldn't be able to keep his mouth shut if he didn't know before hand. Out of surprise at the 'marriage', not because he disapproved of the relationship.
A small noise came from John, and Carson looked up to see a muscle in his face twitch. He didn't know if that was something John did regularly, or if it was a reaction to Carson's presence. He didn't know the depth of John's coma or what treatment John had been given.
Still, he reached up with his free hand to stroke a lock of hair away from John's forehead. "I'm here, love," he whispered. "I'm here."
He swore a smile touched John's lips, and pressed his own to John's hand.
