Sealed Deck advice

Jun 16, 2006 23:46

So tonight I played my first-ever Friday Night Magic at Neutral Ground. I'm positive I misbuilt my deck, and wanted advice as to how other people would've built it...

Maybe a couple card choices different, but G/W/r seems like a really good build. Red is the easiest splash by far. Maybe if you want to be greedy, you can splash a little blue for SSS, but I don't know if it's even necessary.

Were there any card choices you disagreed with, in terms of what made my deck?

I'd say Wild Cantor and Nightguard Patrol. They're both only good for me in drafts, when I have a hyper aggressive deck. I do better with it in front of me, but I like Riot Spikes and the Divebomber. Goliath Spider is even possible too.

Yeah, Julian was running Goliath Spider in his sealed deck too, and I was surprised because I didn't think it was good. I guess in sealed it's playable...

I like Divebomber, too, but I figured since my mana was going in so many directions that minimizing the number of double-White spells would be good. But yeah, in retrospect he should've been in there, since I had some trouble dealing with my Round 1 opponent's flyers...

I did this build myself in MODO before looking at your build ( ... )

Yeah, I definitely underrated the Blue, and I think that if I'd had more time I would've come to a build similar to yours.

The straight-up White in my pool wasn't really that good, but I felt I needed to play Tolsimir, Guildmage and Pollenbright Wings no matter what, so I think I ended up running the White it to not stretch the mana too much. Upon closer inspection I hopefully would've noticed that I was blessed with many free White sources, like you ended up running, so just running the über-good White was clearly the better choice...

So yeah, I like your build, and I think it's definitely the way to go, :-).

One question: don't you think 7 Islands is a bit much? I think I'd probably have run one more Forest instead, or maybe a Plains...

7 Island
5 Forest
1 Plains
1 Boros Garrison
1 Gruul Turf
1 Selesnya Sanctuary
1 Selesnya Signet
1 Boros Signet

This is the mana base. There are no 'universal' one-shot fixers (Wayfinders, Farseek, et al) so the color distribution is fairly simple:
8 Green
7 Blue
5 White
3 Red

That seems pretty reasonable to me. I never want to run less than eight of my primary, so that's where I started. However, the deck has seven blue cards (counting Viper), including a 2-drop (plus GU guildmage), a 3-drop and three 4-drops. You're really going to always want that blue ASAP, and you're not going to mind having some extra due to Train of Thought. You could possibly cut one island, but since Terraformer will help you cast your other stuff, I'd rather have a glut of blue than a shortage. I think the proportions ended up pretty good, especially with only one GG spell (Bramble...I don't count Siege Wurm usually). However, I wouldn't be completely opposed if someone said they wanted more lands in other colors. This is just how I'd run it.
